Five CARICOM nationals receive postgrad scholarships in soil management

The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) has recently announced the recipients of its esteemed postgraduate scholarships, a boon for five talented individuals hailing from the CARICOM region.

The selected scholars for 2024 comprise a diverse cohort, showcasing the region’s rich talent pool. 

Among them are Michelle Wilson–Howard representing Barbados, Abidas Ash from Belize, Darron Williams representing Grenada, Omali Dare hailing from Guyana, and Damian Adjodha proudly representing St Lucia.

A conferment ceremony at the 6th PISLM High-level Forum

The official conferment of these scholarships took place amidst the esteemed gathering at the 6th PISLM High-level Forum, held on April 11, 2024, in Grenada. 

This event marked a significant milestone in the academic and professional journey of the recipients.

PISLM/CSIDS-SOILCARE Postgraduate Scholarship Program

These scholarships, offered through the PISLM/CSIDS-SOILCARE Postgraduate Scholarship program, are tailored to advance studies in soil and land management. 

The scholars are slated to embark on their academic pursuits, commencing in September 2024 and January 2025, respectively.

University partnerships and scholarship benefits

While the scholarships are exclusive to the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago, collaboration with the University of Guyana and the University of Belize will facilitate research supervision. 

The awards, valued between US $50,000 to US $75,000, encompass comprehensive coverage for tuition, fees, books, and living expenses.

Shaping the future of sustainable land management

The PISLM expresses confidence in the capabilities of the selected scholars to effect positive change in their respective domains. 

Embracing areas such as sustainable soil management (SSM), sustainable land management (SLM), soil health, and land degradation, these scholars are poised to spearhead advancements in critical areas identified by the CSIDS-SOILCARE Phase 1 Project.
