FIU commemorates lives lost in pedestrian bridge collapse
Six years have passed since the tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge near the campus of Florida International University (FIU) in southwest Miami-Dade, a catastrophe that claimed the lives of six individuals.
On Friday afternoon, FIU will observe a solemn moment of silence to honor the memory of the victims of the March 15, 2018 collapse.
This somber occasion serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the enduring impact of the tragedy.
Structural failure and investigation findings
The collapse of the 174-foot-long, 950-ton pedestrian bridge occurred during its construction phase.
Following extensive investigation, officials from the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) determined critical errors in the design process.
The design firm responsible had underestimated the load capacity of the bridge while overestimating its strength in a pivotal section, leading to catastrophic failure.
Remembering the victims
Among the victims were individuals who found themselves beneath the structure as it gave way.
Alberto Arias, 53, Brandon Brownfield, 39, FIU student Alexa Duran, 18, Rolando Fraga, 60, and Oswaldo Gonzalez, 57, tragically lost their lives in the incident.
Additionally, construction worker Navaro Brown, 37, perished in the collapse, leaving behind a profound impact on their families, friends, and the wider community.
Construction of a new bridge
Plans are underway for the construction of a new bridge at the same location, spanning Southwest 8th Street at Southwest 109th Avenue.
This initiative aims to enhance safety for students and staff commuting between FIU’s main campus and surrounding residential areas.
Scheduled to commence in 2024, the construction is anticipated to span approximately two years.
Honoring the memory
In remembrance of the lives lost, a memorial plaque will adorn the new bridge upon its completion, serving as a poignant tribute to those who perished in the tragic collapse.
