Explosion near Dominican Republic's capital claims 10 lives

The devastating aftermath of a massive explosion near the Dominican Republic’s capital saw the death count climb to 10, with several more injured on Tuesday.

The scene, overwhelmed with the smoke and remnants of damaged structures, witnessed firefighters scouring the debris as distraught relatives waited outside medical facilities, hopeful for news on their missing loved ones.

San Cristobal, a city lying to the west of Santo Domingo, saw President Luis Abinader in its midst, addressing the calamity.

Challenges in rescue efforts 

As the president stated, 11 individuals remain unaccounted for, with teams actively working to quell the flames in the backdrop of toppled structures and burnt-out cars.

The challenge of locating survivors in the aftermath has been paramount.

The explosion which shattered the calm of a Monday at San Cristobal’s thriving commercial hub, claimed 10 lives and left over 50 wounded, according to Joel Santos, the minister of the presidency.

Current reports indicate that 36 of the injured are still receiving medical care.

Origin of the explosion

Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion occurred at a bakery situated in the city’s bustling “Old Marketplace” – a popular destination for various purchases, from fresh produce to clothing.

Reports are that the inferno quickly consumed neighboring establishments, including a hardware outlet and a furniture store.

Among the victims was a 4-month-old baby who died from head trauma and a woman who worked at a bank, officials said.
