Elaine Thompson opens season with victory

Double Olympic Jamaican gold medalist Elaine Thompson got off to a winning start in her season opening race at the 2018 Queen’s/Grace Jackson track meet at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday.

Competing in the 60 meters, the 26-year-old Thompson powered to victory in 7.24 seconds.

Thompson, who struggled last season with an Achilles injury said the build up to the event felt more like training.

“I feel great, give God thanks. For 2019, my main focus is just to stay healthy and pain free. Each race is a build up to prove strength and fitness, but this one wasn’t really a build up for me, but more like training to execute and see where I am at,” she told reporters after the race.

“The injury is a hard one to deal with, and I’ve dealt with it for a long time, but it’s not like a muscle or tendon so it’s hard to deal with medical-wise, so I just treat it the best that I can and try to improve the best that I can. Right now I’m not sure what coach has in store but my focus is to get fit, put in the work and continue training.”
