Dominica police crack down on drug trafficking with a $37 million bust

In a significant operation, the Dominica Police Force has confiscated illegal drugs valued over EC$37 million. This massive seizure underscores the force’s unwavering commitment to combatting drug trafficking on the island.
Acting Police Commissioner Davidson Valerie emphasized the determination of the police to intensify their efforts against traffickers, aiming to ensure these criminals are apprehended and brought to justice.
Operations yield substantial seizures
The police force reported that in early April, they conducted two separate operations in Castle Bruce and Marigot, located on the east coast and northeast of Dominica, respectively.
These efforts resulted in the seizure of 16,798 grams of cannabis and 696,360 grams of cocaine. These operations are part of a larger series aimed at disrupting the illegal drug trade on the island.
High-value cocaine seizure highlights police efforts
One notable operation led to the recovery of 696.82 kilograms of cocaine from a beached vessel named La-mere Fatal in Marigot, after a chase involving the Dominica Coast Guard.
The drugs, abandoned by the fleeing occupants, were valued at approximately EC$18.6 million.
Valerie said that this event highlights the police force’s dedication and hard work in preventing the use of Dominica’s shores for illegal activities.
Arrests and legal proceedings
Following these seizures, four individuals were arrested and are currently under investigation. Among them, Anthony Roberts was charged with trafficking significant amounts of cannabis and cocaine in Castle Bruce.
Despite his attorney’s arguments for bail, citing Roberts’ non-threat to the community and the seriousness of the offense, the court has granted bail with the case adjourned to a later date.
