The National Hurricane Centre says that Depression Seven has strengthened into a Tropical Storm named Gordon, marking the formation of another named storm in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

Despite its formation, Tropical Storm Gordon currently poses no immediate threat to land. The National Hurricane Centre reports that there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect at this time.

As of 11 am the centre of Tropical Storm Gordon was located approximately 990 miles (1590 kilometres) west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The storm's exact position was recorded at latitude 19.4 North and longitude 38.6 West.

Gordon is currently moving in a west-northwest direction at a speed of 12 mph (19 km/h). Meteorologists expect the storm to shift more westward over the weekend and into Monday, potentially altering its trajectory.

The system has intensified, with maximum sustained winds now reaching 40 mph (65 km/h), accompanied by higher gusts.

These tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 70 miles (110 km) from the centre of the storm.

While slight strengthening is anticipated for today, forecasters predict a weakening trend to begin on Saturday. The storm's minimum central pressure is estimated at 1006 millibars (29.71 inches).
