The countdown is officially on for one of Jamaica’s most anticipated annual events, as the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) launched the 72nd staging of the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show, promising an exciting blend of agriculture, culture, innovation and entertainment.

The launch, held on the lawns of Hi-Pro in White Marl, St. Catherine, on Thursday, June 18, brought together key stakeholders, sponsors, agricultural leaders and members of the farming community as organizers unveiled plans for what is expected to be a landmark staging.

Set for July 31 to August 2 at the Denbigh Showgrounds in Clarendon, this year’s exhibition will be held under the theme, “Growing Forward: Cultivating a Path to a Better Jamaica.” The event arrives at a pivotal time for the agricultural sector, following the impact of Hurricane Melissa last year, which resulted in the cancellation of several parish agricultural shows across the island.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, praised the resilience of Jamaica’s agricultural community and highlighted the sector’s recovery despite significant climate-related challenges.

“Hurricane Melissa may have held us down for a bit, but we certainly rebounded swiftly,” Green told attendees. “With shows like Denbigh, we are able to showcase our success stories and get more people involved in agriculture. Agriculture is BIG BUSINESS.”

The minister pointed to domestic crop production reaching more than 811,000 tonnes during the last financial year and outlined several major initiatives designed to strengthen the industry’s resilience, including expanded irrigation infrastructure, water catchment projects and weather-triggered insurance protection for thousands of farmers.

While agriculture remains at the heart of Denbigh, organizers are placing renewed emphasis on the show’s role as a national cultural celebration that brings together families, communities and visitors from across the region.

JAS President Owen Dobson described the event as much more than a farming exhibition.

“In this our 72nd year, I am not only happy but also proud to see Denbigh going strong,” he said. “The Denbigh Show is a reminder that farming is more than just a job; it is a way of life. It is a commitment to both current and future generations and to the values of perseverance, hard work and sustainability.”

This year’s programme promises something for everyone, blending traditional agricultural displays with performances, educational experiences and family entertainment.

The opening day, dubbed Governor General’s Day, will feature the official opening ceremony, guided tours of specialized exhibition areas and the highly anticipated Diamond Jubilee National Farm Queen Competition, where a new queen will be crowned as part of the competition’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

On Emancipation Day, August 1, Denbigh will shift into full cultural mode with Minister’s and Youth Day. The Jamaica 4-H Clubs will lead activities in the Youth in Agriculture Village, while patrons will be treated to the debut of the “Kulcha Yaad” heritage showcase. The segment will feature traditional folk performances, presentations and the nostalgic sounds of a Nine Night Band before culminating in lively street party celebrations.

The festivities will conclude on Prime Minister’s Day, traditionally the event’s largest-attendance day. Visitors can expect the Prime Minister’s official tour and address, awards presentations for champion farmers and parish pavilions, and the return of one of Denbigh’s most popular entertainment offerings — the Hi-Pro Denbigh Gospel Extravaganza.

The gospel showcase is expected to attract a large crowd with performances from acclaimed gospel artistes including Kevin Downswell and Carlene Davis, among others.

Beyond the stage, patrons can explore an expanded Farmers’ Market, the Ministry of Agriculture Village, the Ornamental Village, livestock exhibitions and the always-popular Champion Farmer Competitions. Organizers say these attractions are designed to provide both education and inspiration while highlighting the innovation driving Jamaica’s agricultural future.

JAS Chief Executive Officer Derron Grant said the 2026 staging reflects a broader vision for the sector’s growth and development.

“We are not only providing learning opportunities for our farmers but also exposing them to larger industry players and encouraging improved livelihoods,” Grant said. “This year, we are dedicated to cultivating a path for even more people to come to the show.”

As anticipation builds, organizers are encouraging Jamaicans at home and abroad to make the pilgrimage to Clarendon for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Jamaican agriculture and national pride.
