In a magical moment for Jamaica, cyclist Dahlia Palmer secured the nation's first medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Palmer's remarkable performance in the keirin final earned her a bronze medal, making her the pride of Jamaica.

Dahlia Palmer was only 0.286 seconds behind the winner, Colombian cyclist Martha Bayona, who clinched the gold, with Mexico's Luz Gaxiola closely following in second place, trailing Bayona by 0.273 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Palmer had also impressed by finishing third in the round one heats, where she was just 0.127 seconds behind Bayona. In that event, Chile's Daniela Calilef secured the second position, trailing Bayona by a mere 0.066 seconds.

Palmer's luck took a turn on Thursday

However, Palmer's luck took a turn on Thursday when she placed 17th in the women's sprint qualification, clocking in at 11.693 seconds, almost a full second behind Bayona, who emerged as the winner with a time of 10.699 seconds.

On a different sporting front, Jamaican tennis player Blaise Bicknell faced a challenging match in the men's singles Round of 16, ultimately losing 3-6, 7-6, 2-6 to Chile's Tomas Barrios. Bicknell also participated in the men's doubles quarter-finals alongside compatriot Rowland Phillips but was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by the Brazilian pair of Gustavo Heide and Marcelo Demolinar.

Jamaica's presence at the 2023 Pan Am Games is substantial, with 90 athletes representing the nation across 16 sporting disciplines. This year's performance builds upon the success of the 2019 Games in Lima, Peru, where Jamaica secured a total of 19 medals, including six gold, six silver, and seven bronze. This achievement surpassed the previous best performance of 14 medals (two gold, four silver, and eight bronze) recorded at the 1959 Chicago Games.
