CWI selector Desmond Haynes sees Australian tour as chance for emerging players to shine

Desmond Haynes, the lead selector for the West Indies cricket team, has acknowledged that the Test squad chosen for the upcoming tour of Australia lacks experience.
However, he views this as a significant opportunity for the many untested and emerging players to make a name for themselves against one of the sport's most formidable opponents.
The selection panel, under Haynes' leadership, announced a 15-member squad for the tour, which will once again be captained by opener Kraigg Brathwaite. Alzarri Joseph, the pace spearhead, has been appointed as his deputy. The squad includes seven uncapped players: batsman Zachary McCaskie, wicketkeeper-batsman Tevin Imlach, all-rounders Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, and Kevin Sinclair, as well as fast bowlers Akeem Jordan and Shamar Joseph.
Rationale behind selecting relatively inexperienced players
Among the squad members, only Kraigg Brathwaite (87), Alzarri Joseph (30), long-serving pacer Kemar Roach (79), and wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua Da Silva (24) have played more than 20 Test matches.
Haynes explained the rationale behind selecting relatively inexperienced players, saying, "The selection panel decided that it would give some opportunities to players who we have been looking at for the last couple of years." He acknowledged the challenging nature of a tour to Australia but emphasized that performing well against such strong opposition can be a launching pad for young players' careers.
All seven uncapped players, except Justin Greaves, were part of the West Indies 'A' Team that recently toured South Africa under the guidance of senior team head coach and selector Andre Coley. Haynes expects them to build on the experience gained during that tour.
Lack of Australian Test experience in the batting department
Haynes also addressed the lack of Australian Test experience in the batting department, noting that only Brathwaite and Da Silva have previously played Tests in Australia. He mentioned that the One-day and Twenty20 International series against England had prevented them from evaluating additional players during the 'A' Team tour of South Africa.
"We did take into consideration that a lot of players selected for Australia are young and inexperienced, but we are hoping that they will perform well enough to set their careers on a high," Haynes added.
Haynes revealed that Cricket West Indies director of cricket, Mile Bascombe, had contacted Darren Bravo, a discarded left-handed batsman, but Bravo remained committed to his publicly announced decision to take a break from the game.
The West Indies squad for the Australian tour includes:
Kraigg Brathwaite (captain), Alzarri Joseph (vice-captain), Alick Athanaze, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, Tevin Imlach, Akeem Jordan, Shamar Joseph, Zachary McCaskie, Kirk McKenzie, Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, Kevin Sinclair.
