Cuba expands scholarship opportunities for Jamaicans

In a bid to enhance educational opportunities and foster bilateral relations, the Cuban Government has announced an extension of the Jamaica-Cuba Bilateral Medical Scholarship Programme.

Effective September, more Jamaican students will benefit from scholarships offered in various fields, including nursing, medicine, and engineering.

Increased scholarships offered

During the eighth CARICOM-Cuba Summit held in Barbados in December 2022, Cuba pledged to amplify its scholarship provision to Caribbean nations, including Jamaica.

According to Fermin Gabriel Quiñones Sánchez, Cuba’s Ambassador to Jamaica, the number of scholarships has surged significantly.

Previously, around six to seven scholarships were available annually, but now, the offering has expanded to 21 for the year 2024.

Commitment to national service

The scholarship programme is not solely based on a first-come-first-serve basis but emphasizes selecting candidates committed to returning to Jamaica to serve the nation.

Ambassador Sánchez highlighted the collaborative effort in identifying suitable candidates from diverse communities across Jamaica, ensuring the best fit for the programme’s objectives.

Special ceremony and mentorship

To commemorate this year’s scholarship recipients, the Cuban Embassy is planning a special ceremony, tentatively scheduled for April.

Notably, the ceremony will feature testimonies from Cuba-trained Jamaican doctors and other Cuban graduates, providing insights into the Cuban educational experience and offering guidance to new scholars.

Comprehensive support

Under the full scholarship, Cuba covers tuition, accommodation, meals, clothing allowance, study materials, and medical care, reaffirming its commitment to supporting Caribbean education initiatives.

Ambassador Sánchez emphasized Cuba’s dedication to fostering educational exchanges, allowing students not only to explore Cuba’s rich culture and history but also to learn the Spanish language.

Self-financed opportunities

In addition to scholarships, individuals have the option to pursue studies in Cuban universities through self-financed programmes.

Annually, approximately 100 Jamaican students avail themselves of this opportunity, further enhancing educational collaboration between the two nations.

Embracing educational opportunities

The expanded scholarship programme between Jamaica and Cuba signifies a deeper commitment to educational advancement and international cooperation.

By providing comprehensive support and fostering cultural exchange, both nations aim to nurture future leaders and strengthen bonds between their peoples.
