Could more seismic activity rock Jamaica?

The strong earthquake that rocked Jamaica on Monday has prompted a warning of the possibility of more tremors. 

Aftershock activity

Reports are that the Earthquake Unit of the University of the West Indies (UWI) has documented 23 aftershocks.

Comparing seismic intensities 

The recent earthquake’s magnitude was highlighted by Professor Simon Mitchell, formerly the head of the Earthquake Unit and currently a Professor of Sedimentary Geology at UWI. 

He was speaking on Radio Jamaica’s program “Beyond the Headlines.”

He noted that the quake was approximately eight times stronger than the tremors the country experienced earlier in the year.

Mitchell also expressed concerns about the fault line running between Haiti and Jamaica, which could see a stronger earthquake.
