The interdiction took place in seas with waves reaching 8 feet.
“Facing daunting, 8-foot seas, the crew of the Robert Yered demonstrated extraordinary professionalism and dedication for hours on end,” said Lt. Richard Rodriguez, the cutter’s commanding officer. “Their performance was a testament to our readiness to save lives and protect our nation’s maritime borders, even under the most grueling conditions.”
The Coast Guard said people taken aboard its cutters are processed to determine their identities and are provided with food, water, shelter and basic medical attention before being transferred or otherwise processed.
The operation was carried out as part of the Coast Guard’s ongoing efforts under Operation Vigilant Sentry, in coordination with partners in Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos.
The Coast Guard and its partner agencies maintain air, land and sea assets across the Florida Straits, Windward Passage, Mona Passage and Caribbean Sea.
The multiagency operations are aimed at protecting life at sea while preventing unlawful maritime entry into the United States and its territories.
