The City of Miramar will be hosting a Juneteenth Family Day celebration under the theme “Discovering Our Roots”, on Monday, June 19, 2023, at 11:00 am at the City Hall Plaza.

The event will consist of interactive activities for children, an education and artisan street fair, food trucks, and live entertainment.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the date on which enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received the news they were free. It is now a federal holiday signed into legislation on June 2021.

This Juneteenth’s event will be hosted by City Commissioner, Yvette Colbourne with several activities to celebrate the meaning of this holiday.

Highlights of the celebration will include a pop-up art exhibit curated by Hampton Art Lovers focused on the work of John Biggers. Biggers' use of African symbols like the “Balafon”, will offer the traditions of ancient African griots' instrument of choice.

In continued exploration of this year’s theme “Discovering our Roots,” there will be an artisan and education street fair, books from the Little Free Library, a Scavenger hunt, crafting and more.

“The City is always pleased to bring to our residents, events and activities that have meaning and value to who we are as Americans and what the journey has been for some of us. As Americans we come from diverse backgrounds and experiences and it’s important to highlight the triumphs and victories but also the struggles and pitfalls that make us stronger and more resolute as a people. It is a story of pride, resilience and determination that will always be of historical importance. We are inviting everyone to come out and share in this special day with us,” said Commissioner Colbourne.

To culminate the holiday, a special Dinner and Awards Presentation by invite only, will also be held under the same theme, “Discovering Our Roots”, at the Miramar Cultural Center in the evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Special keynote speaker will be CNN’s Political Commentator Bakari Sellers.
