CHTA sets the stage for the inaugural Marketplace Responsible Tourism Day

The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) is set to inaugurate the first Marketplace Responsible Tourism Day at this year’s Caribbean Travel Marketplace, scheduled for May 23 in Jamaica.
This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism development, with a unique emphasis on benefiting the local Jamaican communities.
A fresh focus on sustainability
Nicola Madden-Greig, president of CHTA shared that inaugural Marketplace Responsible Tourism Day is a further step in the association’s focus to transform its annual trade show.
She explained that in 2022, CHTA debuted the Caribbean Travel Forum, focusing on the business of tourism, and this new event allows the industry to work together on sustainable initiatives:
The day is designed to encourage the formation of meaningful collaborations that support environmentally sustainable, economically advantageous, and culturally respectful tourism practices.
Bridging communities through responsible tourism
Marketplace Responsible Tourism Day promises to be a convergence of minds and missions, bringing together tourism professionals, government officials, media, and stakeholders from the travel industry.
The agenda is packed with activities designed to make a tangible, positive impact on local communities while promoting the principles of sustainable tourism.
Cultivating connections: Agriculture and tourism
One of the day’s highlights includes a visit to Croydon Estate, a pivotal provider of produce to the tourism sector.
Participants will engage in hands-on agricultural activities, from tree planting to crop harvesting, all while learning about the principles of sustainable agriculture.
Addressing climate change
Another key activity involves a Beach Cleanup and educational tour at the Montego Bay Marine Park.
This effort is focused on the conservation and restoration of coastal resources, crucial for the sustainable benefit of the community, traditional users, and the nation at large.
Strengthening communities
The visit to the SOS Children’s Village in Barrett Town represents a commitment to community engagement. Delegates will participate in various projects, including painting, carpentry, and developing a village farming initiative.
They are also encouraged to donate essential items such as clothing, tablets, and school supplies for the children.
Charting a course for responsible travel
The introduction of Marketplace Responsible Tourism Day is a significant stride towards integrating sustainable practices within the travel industry.
It not only benefits the host community but also serves as a vital platform for learning, collaboration, and a renewed commitment to responsible travel, aligning with global movements towards more conscientious tourism practices.
