CARICOM pursues Haitian-led solution amid turmoil

Amid the ongoing turmoil gripping Haiti, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) chairman, Dr. Irfaan Ali, reaffirmed the commitment of the regional integration movement to seek a Haitian-led solution.

President Ali emphasized the unwavering stance of Guyana and the wider CARICOM community in the pursuit of peace and stability within the region.

He underscored the collective endeavor to foster safe societies free from acts of terror or violence.

Supporting peace and prosperity: Humanitarian aid for Palestine

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony for GUY$110.8 million in humanitarian aid for Palestine, President Ali reiterated Guyana’s support for endeavors aimed at nurturing peace and prosperity globally.

He emphasized the importance of every member of the human family being able to live in peace and contribute to building prosperous and harmonious societies.

CARICOM’s engagement with Haiti

President Ali highlighted CARICOM’s ongoing engagement with Haiti, emphasizing the monitoring of the situation within the troubled nation.

Notably, in 2023, the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) was established to extend CARICOM’s Good Offices to the Government of Haiti and various stakeholders.

The EPG has engaged a diverse array of actors, including political figures, the private sector, the diaspora, and civil society, in efforts to facilitate a return to stability.

Recent developments, including the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the formation of a Transitional Presidential Council, mark significant steps in this process.

Escalating violence and humanitarian crisis

Recent reports underscore the escalating violence plaguing Haiti, with over 2,500 people killed or wounded in the first three months of the year, according to a UN report.

The dire situation has prompted international intervention, including the arrival of a US military plane carrying non-lethal materials for Haitian security forces.

However, challenges persist, with the closure of the airport and limited functioning of main ports severely hindering the procurement of essential supplies.
