Canada commits to strengthening regional partnerships at Canada-CARICOM summit

During the inaugural Canada-CARICOM Summit in Ottawa this week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to fostering strategic regional partnerships. 

The summit, which saw participation from leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), witnessed key announcements aimed at bolstering cooperation with CARICOM nations.

New overseas employment initiative for the fisheries sector

In his address on the second day of the summit, Prime Minister Trudeau unveiled plans for a groundbreaking overseas employment program targeting the fisheries industry. 

Expansion of duty-free program for Commonwealth CARICOM nations

Additionally, Prime Minister Trudeau announced the expansion of the Commonwealth Caribbean Countries Tariff program, which grants duty-free access to the Canadian market for CARICOM member states. 

Trudeau further mentioned their commitment to implement a new foreign labor program for agriculture and fish processing under their Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

A summit for cooperation

The Canada-CARICOM Summit served as a platform for fostering closer ties between Canada and the Caribbean region. 

Leaders engaged in discussions encompassing various areas of cooperation, highlighting the importance of collaboration to address regional challenges.

During the summit, Caribbean leaders emphasized the need for Canada’s support in creating a safer and more climate-resilient world. 

Reforming financial institutions and Haiti’s security

Leaders from CARICOM nations also urged Canada to assist in reforming financial institutions and addressing the ongoing sociopolitical crisis in Haiti.
