The figures were highlighted by Broward County Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony as the agency outlined its approach to crime reduction, which combines patrols, investigations, crime analysis, targeted enforcement and prevention programs.

BSO said its district-based policing model allows deputies and detectives to combine knowledge of local neighborhoods with crime analysis to identify trends and emerging issues and determine where resources should be deployed.
When crimes occur, detectives gather evidence, pursue investigative leads and work to connect cases and identify suspects, according to the agency.
The sheriff's office also highlighted several crime prevention and community policing programs. Under its While You Were Sleeping initiative, deputies identify preventable security concerns during routine patrols and leave residents with information on steps they can take to improve security.
BSO's Neighborhood Support Team and Park, Walk and Talk programs are also designed to increase interaction between deputies and residents, address community concerns and provide crime prevention information.
The agency said reducing crime requires multiple strategies rather than a single program, including visible patrols, proactive policing, investigations, data analysis, targeted enforcement and partnerships with residents and businesses.
Tony said the agency intends to continue using crime data to guide its operations and direct resources toward areas where they can have the greatest impact.
"Public safety has no finish line," Tony said, adding that BSO's approach will continue to evolve as crime trends and challenges change.
BSO defines Part One offenses using the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The offenses are divided into violent and property crimes and are considered among the most serious offenses tracked for crime-reporting purposes.
