Broward County Animal Care has waived adoption fees through July 26 as part of the nationwide Empty the Shelters campaign, an initiative aimed at helping more homeless pets find permanent homes while easing overcrowding at animal shelters.

The county's official pet adoption and animal welfare agency is partnering with the BISSELL Pet Foundation for the event, which runs daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Broward County Animal Care shelter, located at 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale.

Dogs and cats of all ages, breeds and sizes are available for adoption. Officials said every adopted pet will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before going to its new home.

Animal Care Director Doug Brightwell said the campaign benefits both adopting families and the shelter's ongoing rescue efforts.

"Every adoption removes a barrier for another animal waiting for help," Brightwell said. "Through our partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation, we're making it easier for families to say 'yes' to adoption while creating much-needed space to care for more homeless pets. When you adopt, you're not just changing one animal's life—you make it possible for us to serve the next one, too."

The Empty the Shelters campaign seeks to eliminate financial barriers to pet adoption while creating space for shelters to care for additional animals in need.

County officials are encouraging residents to visit the shelter, meet the available pets and consider adoption. Those who are unable to adopt can also support the agency by fostering animals, volunteering or making donations.
