Broward County has launched a countywide relief campaign to collect essential supplies for communities in Colombia affected by a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Aug. 10.
The donation drive begins Monday, Aug. 17, with collection bins available at selected Broward County libraries and parks.
The earthquake, centered in western Colombia, caused widespread destruction in several communities, including Cali and Pereira. The disaster has killed hundreds of people and left thousands injured as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
Broward County is asking residents and businesses to donate essential items to help affected communities recover and rebuild.
Requested supplies include nonperishable foods, personal hygiene products, baby items, pet supplies and disaster recovery equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, first aid kits, solar-powered lights, tarps, batteries and work gloves.
The county said it will not accept new or used clothing or linens.

"The Colombian community is an essential part of Broward County's identity. When their loved ones face tragedy, we stand right beside them," Broward County Mayor Mark D. Bogen said.
"Through this relief fund, we're establishing a trusted channel to deliver vital aid, food, and financial resources directly to the hardest-hit areas. Broward has never hesitated to step up in global emergencies, and I know our residents will answer the call once again," he said.
