Broward County residents can receive a free tree this Saturday as part of an initiative to expand green space and tree coverage across the county.
Broward County Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis will host the giveaway on Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to noon at Miramar Pineland Park, 3600 S. University Drive in Miramar.
Residents can choose from five tree varieties: sweetsop, mango, June plum, soursop and Simpson's stopper. One tree will be available per Broward County household, while supplies last. Proof of Broward County residency is required.
Several of the varieties produce tropical fruit that can be grown in South Florida, including sweetsop, mango, June plum and soursop, also known as guanabana. Simpson's stopper is a Florida native plant that produces berries that provide food for wildlife.
"Planting a tree is one of those simple things that can provide benefits for years to come," Davis said. "It can give a family fresh fruit or a place to enjoy some shade, while at the same time helping us build a greener and healthier Broward County."
The giveaway is being held in partnership with NatureScape Broward, a county program that works with government agencies, municipalities, schools and community organizations to increase Broward's tree canopy.
