Boosting disaster preparedness in the Caribbean

The Caribbean region, known for its vulnerability to natural disasters, is set to receive a significant boost in its disaster preparedness capabilities. 

A collaborative effort between the FirstCaribbean International ComTrust Foundation and the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has resulted in a substantial grant aimed at enhancing rainfall monitoring systems. 

Grant allocation and impact

The generous grant, amounting to US$75,000, is designated to bolster weather monitoring networks across four Caribbean countries. 

This funding will enable the integration of automated weather systems and supplementary equipment into the existing meteorological infrastructure. The primary goal is to fortify the region’s capacity to accurately monitor and predict weather patterns, an essential component in managing and mitigating the impacts of natural disasters.

Previous beneficiaries and ongoing support

Prior to this initiative, countries like Belize, Antigua & Barbuda, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Cayman Islands have benefited from CCRIF’s support. 

With an estimated US$250,000 already invested, these nations have witnessed significant enhancements in their rainfall data collection and measurement systems. This ongoing support underscores the CCRIF's dedication to reinforcing disaster resilience across the Caribbean.
