Belize Prime Minister announces return of embattled minister in cabinet reshuffle

Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceño, has announced the decision to reinstate Senior Minister Andre Perez into the government fold.
This move comes amidst the announcement of a Cabinet reshuffle, signifying a strategic reconfiguration within the administration.
Investigation and allegations
Perez’s return follows a period of leave initiated in August last year, during which an investigation was underway into allegations against him.
The Rural South Area representative found himself entangled in a scandal involving a female attorney, with media reports amplifying the gravity of the accusations.
Allegations prompted calls for a criminal investigation, fueled by detailed accounts shared by the attorney.
Government’s commitment and changes
In the latest government statement, emphasis was placed on the commitment to enhance governmental performance and serve the people of Belize under the leadership of Prime Minister Briceño.
Notably, adjustments to the Cabinet’s composition were announced, reflecting deliberation and consultation.
Perez has been invited to resume his ministerial duties, specifically overseeing the portfolios of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management, along with assuming control of NEMO and the National Fire Service.
Prime Minister Briceño has also assumed additional ministerial responsibilities.
Response and ongoing dynamics
Despite consistent denials from Perez regarding the allegations, the attorney involved, Wendy Auxillou, took to social media to express her dissatisfaction with his reinstatement.
However, Auxillou’s failure to officially report the matter to the police has raised questions about the validity of her claims.
Police Commissioner Chester Williams stressed the importance of formal complaints, indicating a reluctance to pursue investigations based solely on social media posts.
Ministerial perspective
Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa weighed in on the situation, highlighting the absence of formal police reports regarding the allegations.
Musa cautioned against drawing conclusions from social media posts, emphasizing the need for proper legal procedures to address such matters.
