Belize launches investigation into suspected case of meningitis

Belize’s health authorities have launched an investigation into a suspected case of meningitis in a six-year-old from Belize City.

Child in good health

Early tests suggest that it is not bacterial meningitis and that the child is currently in good health

Further testing is expanding to schools and those who had contact with the child.

Previous case of bacterial meningitis

In December, health authorities confirmed a case of bacterial meningitis, an infection that attacks the protective membranes surrounding the spinal cord and brain.

Reports are that a child first exhibited symptoms on November 30 and gradually deteriorated over the following days, with the situation worsening by December 3.

Preliminary results from the laboratory tests identified the causative organism as Streptococcus pneumonia, a bacterium commonly found in nasal passages.

This bacterium can lead to a range of infections, including pneumonia and meningitis.
