Belgium sets the early tone
The European side wasted no time asserting itself, forcing USA goalkeeper Matt Freese into a spectacular save less than a minute after kickoff to prevent an immediate breakthrough.
That warning proved only temporary.
Belgium continued to dominate possession and territory before finally breaking through in the ninth minute when Charles De Ketelaere capitalized after the American defense failed to clear the danger, tapping home to give the Red Devils an early advantage.
The relentless pressure left the United States struggling to establish any rhythm for much of the opening half.
Tillman sparks hope before Belgium responds
Following the first hydration break, the Americans gradually settled into the match as the crowd at Lumen Field attempted to lift the home side.
Their reward arrived in the 31st minute.
Balogun won a free kick just outside Belgium’s penalty area, creating an opportunity for Malik Tillman to once again showcase his dead-ball brilliance. Just as he had against Bosnia & Herzegovina in the previous round, Tillman hit the target, thanks to a wicked deflecyion which wrong-footed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to level the score at 1-1.
Any momentum generated by the equalizer disappeared almost immediately.
Less than two minutes later, Belgium reclaimed the lead when De Ketelaere rose above the defense to head home his second goal of the evening, restoring the visitors' advantage before halftime.
Second-half mistakes prove costly
The United States emerged from the break with renewed energy after manager Mauricio Pochettino introduced attacking midfielder Gio Reyna, whose creativity immediately gave the Americans greater urgency in the attacking third.
For a brief spell, the match appeared to be tilting toward the hosts.
Instead, a costly mistake swung it decisively in Belgium’s favor.
In the 57th minute, Freese raced outside his penalty area to control a long ball with his chest. After evading an onrushing De Ketelaere, the goalkeeper misplayed his next touch, allowing the Belgian forward to block his attempted pass which set up Hans Vanaken, who calmly rolled the ball into an unguarded net for a commanding 3-1 lead.
Moments later, the United States suffered another setback when captain Christian Pulisic was forced off with an injury following a challenge that both the American players and supporters believed should have resulted in a foul.
Courtois denies Balogun before Lukaku finishes the job
Although the United States enjoyed lengthy spells of possession after the second-half hydration break, Belgium's disciplined defense consistently denied clear scoring opportunities.
Belgium manager Rudi Garcia then reinforced his attack by introducing Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku and Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku, giving the Red Devils fresh firepower for the closing stages.
Balogun nearly reignited American hopes late in the contest after collecting a long pass and racing in alone against Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. His well-struck left-footed effort, however, was brilliantly turned away by the veteran goalkeeper.
Any lingering suspense vanished in stoppage time.
Lukaku powered home Belgium’s fourth goal, driving a clinical finish beyond the outstretched Freese to complete an emphatic 4-1 victory and underline the Red Devils’ superiority.
Co-hosts eliminated before quarter-finals
The result not only ended the United States’ World Cup campaign but also marked the departure of the tournament’s final co-host nation.
With Canada, Mexico, and now the United States all eliminated in the Round of 16, none of the host countries will be represented in the quarter-finals as Belgium advances to face Spain with momentum firmly on its side.
