Battle of titans! Pooran leads star-studded Sportsman of the Year nominees

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Nicholas Pooran, the dynamic and hard-hitting batsman of the West Indies, has emerged as a frontrunner for the highly anticipated 2024 Sportsman of the Year award.

With a record-shattering performance in T20 cricket over the past year, Pooran is poised to claim the prestigious title at the First Citizens Sports Awards, set to take place on January 11 at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Trinidad.

Pooran’s 2024 campaign was nothing short of extraordinary. The 29-year-old left-handed powerhouse etched his name in cricketing history by amassing an astonishing 2,331 runs across 74 T20 innings, boasting an enviable average of 40.89 and a dazzling strike rate of 157.3.

In a year defined by milestones, Pooran also obliterated Chris Gayle’s longstanding record for the most sixes in a calendar year. With a jaw-dropping 170 sixes, he outshone Gayle’s 2015 feat of 135, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most electrifying batsmen in the sport.

Other elite contenders in the spotlight

While Pooran’s exploits on the cricket field have captivated fans, the competition for the Sportsman of the Year award is fierce, with other world-class athletes vying for the honor.

Jereem Richards, the celebrated sprinter and newly crowned TTO Olympic Committee’s Sportsman of the Year, dazzled at the Paris Olympics. His blistering 43.78 seconds in the men’s 400m final set a new national record, falling heartbreakingly short of bronze by just four hundredths of a second.

Dylan Carter, an exceptional swimmer, continued to impress in global competitions, while Nicholas Paul, a cyclist of extraordinary talent, showcased his dominance on the track.

Akeem Stewart, the inspirational paralympic discus thrower, has also earned recognition for his extraordinary accomplishments.

Spotlight on Trinidad & Tobago’s top female athletes

In parallel, the race for the coveted Sportswoman of the Year award promises to be equally enthralling. Among the outstanding nominees are Leah Bertrand, a sprinter of remarkable promise; Zuri Ferguson, a swimmer with an extraordinary talent in the pool; and Makaira Wallace, a cyclist demonstrating unmatched prowess on the track.

These athletes, along with the male contenders, represent the epitome of Trinidad & Tobago’s athletic excellence.

As the First Citizens Sports Awards draw near, all eyes will be on the Hyatt Regency Trinidad to honor these exceptional individuals whose achievements have uplifted the nation’s sporting legacy. For Pooran, whose record-breaking year epitomized cricketing mastery, the chance to be crowned Sportsman of the Year would be yet another feather in his illustrious cap.
