Barbados PM champions better treatment for workers

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has announced her firm commitment to enforcing minimum standards for worker treatment across all sectors, including the tourism industry.

This comes amidst concerns from businesses about potential competitive disadvantages.

However, Mottley counters these claims with a stark critique, suggesting that any business model reliant on the exploitation of labor is inherently flawed.

Legislative steps toward fair treatment

During a spirited discussion in the House of Assembly, the spotlight turned to the Labour Clauses (Concessions) Bill, 2024.

This proposed legislation aims to ensure that companies benefiting from government concessions are also bound by minimum standards in their treatment of employees.

The Prime Minister’s approach to defining ‘minimum’ standards is notably inclusive, advocating for a process that involves consultation to establish a clear and fair framework for all parties involved.
