Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc (BTMI) clinched the coveted People’s Choice Award at the prestigious DC Embassy Chef Challenge, held at Union Station in Washington D.C. on March 7. 

This victory marks Barbados’ third triumph in the esteemed culinary competition.

Barbadian culinary excellence

Representing Barbados were acclaimed Chefs Damian Leach of Cocktail Kitchen and Ann-Marie Leach, a distinguished vegan chef and wellness coach at Yummy Mummies, alongside Dameain Williams, a prominent mixologist hailing from the island.

The Embassy Chef Challenge, a renowned international culinary event, congregates embassy chefs worldwide for a flavorful showdown, displaying their countries’ gastronomic delights and culinary finesse in a spirited competition.

BTMI: Driving Barbados’ culinary narrative

Tenisha Holder, Senior Business Development Officer with BTMI USA, lauded Barbados’ culinary prowess, emphasizing the island’s distinct culinary heritage and its status as the Caribbean’s culinary epicenter. 

Holder led the destination marketing efforts, expressing pride in the team’s stellar performance.

Celebrating Barbados’ culinary identity

Highlighting the island’s vibrant culinary scene, Holder acknowledged Barbadians worldwide for their unwavering dedication to gastronomy and mixology. 

She extended an invitation to the annual Barbados Food and Rum Festival, scheduled for October 24 to 27, urging enthusiasts to mark their calendars.

Fostering partnerships and connections

The Embassy Chef Challenge serves as a catalyst for fostering partnerships and nurturing connections for the BTMI team, particularly within the culinary and hospitality sectors. 

The event offers a prime platform to showcase Barbadian cuisine, notably its renowned rum-based concoctions, as Barbados stands as the birthplace of this beloved spirit.

A culinary destination

Participation in culinary events like the Embassy Chef Challenge reinforces Barbados’ position as a premier destination for culinary travel. 

BTMI strategically targets the DMV area, recognizing it as a pivotal market for attracting visitors. 

The team’s concerted efforts include hosting media events, engaging with tour operators, and promoting Bajan culture through various initiatives and events.

Enhanced accessibility

With a focus on enhancing accessibility, BTMI continues to cultivate relationships with air carriers and tour operators to streamline travel to Barbados. 

Notably, United Airlines offers a year-round, non-stop weekly flight from Dulles Airport, with additional carriers providing convenient service to the island via short layovers at Charlotte, North Carolina, and Miami.
