BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Former Barbadian all-rounder Kenroy Williams has passed away at the age of 40 after a lengthy struggle with breast cancer.

Williams, a versatile middle-order batsman and off-spinner, died at his home on Monday, leaving a lasting legacy in Caribbean cricket.

A respected figure on the cricket field, Williams played First Class and List A cricket for his home country of Barbados and also represented Jamaica in the WICB Professional 4-Day competition during the 2018-2019 season. His talent and commitment to the sport also earned him a spot on the West Indies ‘B’ team, marking him as a valued member of the regional cricket community.

Tributes from both the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) underscored Williams’ remarkable courage and dedication to the sport, both on and off the field. The BCA shared on Instagram, “What an innings. What a fight. On behalf of the Board of Directors, management, and staff, we offer our sincere condolences to the loved ones of Kenroy Williams. He will always be remembered for his courage and fighting spirit. May he Rest in Peace.”

WIPA expressed their sorrow

Similarly, the WIPA expressed their sorrow in a statement on Facebook, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Kenroy Williams. Kenroy was an exemplary sportsman on and off the field, he fought a good fight. May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him. To Kenroy’s family, friends, and the entire cricketing fraternity, please accept our deepest condolences.”

Williams’ regional cricket career spanned 15 years, from 2004 to 2019. In his 29 First Class matches, he amassed 915 runs with four half-centuries, achieving an average of 20.33 and a top score of 82. His prowess extended to bowling as well, where he took 47 wickets at an average of 29.12, including a five-wicket haul. In List A cricket, Williams played 19 matches, contributing 240 runs with an average of 17.14 and claiming seven wickets.

The Barbadian cricket community remembers Kenroy Williams not only for his skill but for his resilience and his unwavering dedication to the game.
