Barbadian convicted of attempted cocaine smuggling at Jamaican airport

A 40-year-old Barbadian national was convicted last week Friday for violations under the Dangerous Drugs Act as he attempted to smuggle over 1.8 kilograms of cocaine into the United Kingdom via the Sangster International Airport in Jamaica
Airport arrest unveils smuggling attempt
Kelvin Charles, a carpenter hailing from Bridgetown, Barbados was arrested on Thursday, October 26.
According to reports, his apprehension occurred when customs officers uncovered the illicit substance, concealed within false compartments of his luggage during the airport’s rigorous security screening procedures.
Facing the charges
Charles was charged with three serious offenses: possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, and attempting to export cocaine. His fate hung in the balance as he awaited his day in court.
Guilty plea and sentencing
During his court appearance before the St James Parish Court, Charles pleaded guilty to all charges.
He was sentenced as follows:
- Possession of cocaine: Charles was fined $200,000 or sentenced to six months in prison.
- Dealing in cocaine: Discharged.
- Attempting to export cocaine: A $400,000 fine or an alternative six months behind bars, with a mandatory minimum sentence of six months, was imposed.
