Bahamian MP Kirk Cornish charged with rape, assault and threats of death

Kirk Cornish, a legislator in the Bahamas Government, was remanded on Wednesday when he faced charges consisting of two counts of rape against a 35-year-old woman.

These allegations follow his forced resignation on Tuesday as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Cornish now faces further legal trouble with two more counts: assault and threats of death against the same victim.

According to the prosecution, the alleged crimes occurred in both Coopers Town, Abaco and Nassau, New Providence.

During his appearance before acting chief magistrate Roberto Reckley, Cornish was not called upon to enter a plea to the allegations.

The legal proceedings were postponed until October 17, with Cornish's attorney Owen Wells expressing a desire for an early trial date. Wells also noted that he would immediately seek bail for his client.

Cornish's defense: A plea of innocence 

Earlier this year, a police investigation was initiated following a woman’s allegations against Cornish.

While Cornish denied the accusations, stating they are false, the independent Director of Public Prosecutions believes there is enough evidence to press charges against him.

Cornish, on the other hand, was optimistic about the upcoming trial, indicating his confidence that the judicial process will confirm his innocence.
