Some 22 percent of Florida voters voted in the August 28 primary elections. Although statistically this was a low voter turnout it was of the highest in Florida primary elections which has seen low voter turnout traditionally.

Candidates elected in the primary election will now advance to seek election in the respective seats in the November 6 general elections. Those without opponents in those elections would have been automatically  elected to the respective seat yesterday.

One of the more surprising results of the primary elections apart from Andre Gillum winning the Democratic primary for Florida governor was the defeat of Haitian-American Florida Senator Daphne Campbell who lost her District 38 seat to fellow Democrat Jason Pizzo. Campbell was elected to the Senate in 2016, after serving in the Florida House.

In one of the more anticipated races for the US Congress, former University of Miami president and Secretary of health and Human Services in President Bill Clinton administration won the Democratic primary in District 27. She will now contest Republican Maria Salazar in November to fill the seat formerly held by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

Several of the candidates for circuit and county court judges will have to advance to future run-off elections since none of the candidates gained over 50 percent of the votes in their respective race. In these situations the candidates with the two highest percentages of votes will compete in run-off election.
