The Government of Antigua and Barbuda says it will be implementing a new initiative aimed at addressing unemployment among fathers.

This program seeks to place unemployed fathers in jobs, particularly in beautification groups and other sectors, to ensure they can provide financial support for their children.

Cabinet spokesperson Lionel Hurst emphasized the importance of skill acquisition in this effort, stating, "We believe that the acquisition of skills will enable them to earn throughout their working life sufficient that they will not have to turn to criminal activity in order to bring money into the household."

The initiative comes in response to concerns that many single mothers are unable to receive adequate financial support from unemployed fathers.

The Cabinet reminded citizens that fathers have "certain obligations imposed by law," and the Administration intends to assist in ensuring these obligations are met.

Hurst highlighted the opportunities available for skill development, noting, "Some of the important skills are being taught at the ABICE or the Harrison Centre at no cost in some instances to some of those who are being trained."

He specifically mentioned that this program could benefit "men and girls who are involved in crimes, boys actually in some instances and girls involved in criminal activity in gangs," providing them with "an opportunity to learn skills that will take them through life and allow them to earn sufficient income."

The government's approach is not limited to job placement and skill development. Hurst also pointed out additional support for aspiring entrepreneurs: "For those who are interested in establishing small businesses, the entrepreneurial development program with funding at 2% is really another one of those methodologies that the government is employing."

The overarching goal of these initiatives, according to Hurst, is "to ensure that they have the necessary means by which they can earn an income and not be found wanting and therefore having to turn to crime."
