Antigua and Barbuda's Defence Force gets new aircraft

The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) is set to enhance its operations with a new addition to its air wing: the 'Alpha 2'.

Marking a significant milestone, the ‘Alpha 2’ joins the ranks as the second nine-seater aircraft in the ABDF’s fleet. This addition not only bolsters the air wing’s capacity but also promises to add agility in responding to varying situations.

Diverse duties await

Lieutenant Colonel Alando Michael shared insights on the pivotal roles the new aircraft will play.

He noted that with ‘Alpha 1’ already in action, ‘Alpha 2’ will enable them to conduct duties spanning medevac services, troop movement, humanitarian disaster recovery, and search and rescue efforts.

“Let’s say for instance, we had to go to St Lucia, and at the same time we had a call from Barbuda for a medevac. It now allows us the versatility to be in two places at once,” he said while speaking with the Antigua Observer.

Beyond emergency and defense services, the aircraft also serves a dignitary role. When commercial flights are unavailable, it shoulders the responsibility of transporting heads of government.

Regional reach of the air wing

While ABDF primarily serves Antigua and Barbuda, its ambit extends further. The services of the air wing are generously offered to the 11 other nations that are part of the Regional Security System (RSS).

For those unfamiliar, an air wing is essentially a military aircraft unit comprising potentially dozens of aircraft.

Medevac and RSS

A medevac is a specialized service dedicated to the swift transportation of individuals who are either sick or injured to medical facilities, typically using helicopters or planes.

Established in the early 1980s, the RSS was initiated with the vision of promoting stability, well-being, and regional security among its member nations.

The RSS is a consortium of 12 countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Barbados.
