Antigua and Barbuda is gearing up to host the 55th General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS), marking what Foreign Minister E.P. Chet Greene has called a major diplomatic milestone for the twin-island nation.
Speaking during an interview on ABS, Greene described the June 26–28 event, set to take place at the American University of Antigua, as a moment of global recognition for the country’s growing international presence.
“This is a crowning achievement for our diplomacy,” Greene declared. “We have never hosted an event of this magnitude in the OAS context. It signals confidence in Antigua and Barbuda’s capacity, both as a democracy and a venue.”
The General Assembly is expected to convene foreign ministers and senior officials from all 34 OAS member states. According to Greene, Antigua and Barbuda’s role as host underscores its commitment to multilateralism and strengthens its reputation as a diplomatic bridge between larger powers and smaller states.
Preparations are in full swing, with the government working alongside security agencies, local contractors, and international partners to coordinate logistics and ensure the event runs smoothly. Greene praised Prime Minister Gaston Browne for “championing” the initiative and emphasized the Cabinet’s collective support.
“It’s a moment for us to shine,” he said.
The upcoming assembly marks the first time Antigua and Barbuda will host the hemispheric summit, further solidifying its role on the international stage.
