PROVIDENCE, Guyana – A dominant performance by the Guyana Amazon Warriors propelled them to the top of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table following a convincing 35-run victory over the St Lucia Kings on Saturday.
The standout contributions came from Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope, who each smashed half-centuries, leading their team to an impressive total of 207 for seven.
Hetmyer, named Player of the Match, set the pace with a blistering 58 runs, while Hope supported him with a solid 56. Their explosive partnership was crucial in pushing the Warriors to a challenging score. After winning the toss and opting to bat, the Warriors began their innings with openers Azam Khan and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who combined for a quick 49 runs in just five overs before both fell victim to St Lucia's bowling attack, leaving the team at 53 for two.
An 85-run partnership
The arrival of Hope and Hetmyer at the crease revitalized the Warriors' innings as they unleashed an 85-run partnership over just under nine overs. Hetmyer’s innings was particularly aggressive, featuring nine boundaries and a six in his 30-ball effort before being dismissed by Alzarri Joseph. Hope, initially slower to score, picked up pace and punished left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, hitting three sixes and a boundary in one over, ultimately reaching his ninth CPL fifty off just 29 balls.
In their defense, the Warriors' spinners, Imran Tahir, Moeen Ali, and Gudakesh Motie, effectively stifled the Kings' batting line-up, limiting them to 172 for seven. Faf du Plessis fought valiantly for St Lucia, scoring an impressive 92 runs despite suffering from cramps, but his efforts were not enough to chase down the Warriors' total.
With this victory, the Warriors soared to the top of the CPL table with 14 points, level with the Kings but boasting a superior net run rate. The Warriors also have a game in hand against the third-placed Trinbago Knight Riders, who currently sit on 12 points. The top two teams will compete for a place in the CPL final, while the third and fourth-placed teams will battle for a chance at redemption.
