Amazon has suspended operations with cargo carrier 21 Air following the deadly crash of Flight 7598 at Miami International Airport, as authorities continue investigating the Sept. 6 incident that killed five people and injured five others.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel confirmed the decision Sunday, saying the company had reviewed circumstances surrounding the crash while supporting the ongoing investigation.
“Safety has always been our top priority, whether in our own operations or when we’re working with partners,” Nantel said.
“After the tragic incident last weekend, we’ve spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598. We’ll continue working to support the investigation and everyone affected.”
Flight 7598, a Boeing 767 operated by 21 Air, overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sept. 6.
The aircraft struck a van carrying five people who worked as part of a crew that cleans aircraft. All five people inside the van were killed.
The cargo jet then went through a fence and struck an SUV on a nearby city street.
Five other people were injured in the crash. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Tuesday that the aircraft's pilot and co-pilot had been released from the hospital.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including reports that the aircraft may have been traveling too fast to land safely.
Crews have also begun the process of dismantling the damaged aircraft as the investigation continues.
Amazon has not indicated how long its suspension of operations with 21 Air will remain in effect.
