Throughout this election season in the United States, democratic candidate Joe Biden and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris have underscored the importance of the Caribbean-American vote in this election.

Prominent members of the community including Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Attorney Marlon Hill and entertainer Shaggy, all Jamaican-American, have also reiterated the need for members of the Caribbean community go out and vote; and it seems as if the push has worked.

According to Daniel A. Smith, chair of political science at the University of Florida, some 70% of Jamaican-Americans registered voters have turned out to vote for the 2020 elections.

Smith posted his findings via Twitter.

In his thread, he posted the percentage of naturalized citizens in Florida who have voted this year, and for which party.

Of the 82,000 Jamaican-born naturalized citizens who are registered to vote in Florida, 70% of them have already voted. Of the total number of those registered to vote, 75% are democrats, 5% are republicans and 20% are No Party Affiliated. But the turnout from Jamaican-Americans in this election so far is: 73.9% (DEM), 57.3% (NPA), 70.7% (other) and 64.8% (REP).

For Haitian-Americans, which account for one of the largest groups of Caribbean-Americans in Florida, 64% of the 103,000 Haitian naturalized citizens who are registered had already turned out to vote. Of the total number of those registered to vote, 76% are democrats, 4% are republicans and 19% are No Party Affiliated. But the turnout from Haitian-Americans in this election so far is: 67.2% (DEM), 53.4% (NPA), 64% (other) and 51.8% (REP).

The data is based on those who have voted in Florida as of November 1, when early voting ended in the state.

Statewide, as of November 2, close to 9 million people have already voted.
