Florida ranks high for minority-owned businesses

Florida remains a good market for black-owned businesses, according to a newly released U.S. Census Report. According to the report, Black or African American-owned firms rose from 1.9 to 2.6 million from 2007 to 2012. The sunshine state is in second place in the country for the most Black or African-American owned firms, at over 250,000. Florida also leads all states in the number of firms owned by people of Cuban background and Puerto Rican background.  Along with Florida, California and Texas each had more than a half-million Hispanic-owned firms in 2012. 

The total number of minority-owned businesses rose from 5.8 million in 2007 to 8 million in 2012, while the number of businesses owned by whites decreased by 1.1 million to 18.9 million.

The government also plans to invest $13.4 million to support continued minority small business growth.
