Thirty-seven Jamaicans who have made remarkable contributions to their communities—particularly in leadership and academics—were honored on Thursday with the Governor-General’s Achievement Award (GGAA) for 2025.

The awards ceremony, held at King’s House, highlighted the achievements of individuals who have demonstrated excellence and service despite personal and societal challenges. Among the recipients were veteran educator and President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA), Dr. Mark Smith; Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Senior Reporter Garfield Angus; and Dr. Melissa Flinch, founder of the Free Your Mind Foundation.

In his address, Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, praised the honourees for their perseverance and commitment. “All 37 of today’s awardees remind us that excellence is not an accident. It is cultivated often against great odds, and it flourishes when grounded in service to others,” he said.

Sir Patrick noted that the journeys of the awardees reflect courage, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to service. He encouraged them to continue making a meaningful impact, stating, “The recognition bestowed on each one of you today is not the end of your civic journey but it is a powerful catalyst to press us forward.”

Referencing this year’s theme, “Igniting Brilliance: Where Excellence Meets Impact,” the Governor-General underscored the importance of using one's talents for the betterment of others.

Speaking on behalf of the honourees, Manchester’s recipient in the 25–35 age group, Dr. Melissa Flinch, reflected on the significance of the moment. “In a world that often feels dark, days like these remind Jamaicans of their God-given ability to leave an indelible mark on the world,” she said. Dr. Flinch also called on fellow recipients to continue striving for excellence and to use programmes like the GGAA as motivation to persevere against the odds.

Established in 1991, the Governor-General’s Achievement Award recognises Jamaicans and those of Jamaican heritage who have contributed meaningfully to national development. It forms part of the Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence (GGPE), which promotes service above self and celebrates individuals influencing national life in Jamaica and across the diaspora.
