Jamaican-American Rep. Yvette Clarke leads push to exempt health workers from H-1B fee hike

Jamaican-American Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at shielding healthcare workers from a steep increase in H-1B visa costs, as U.S. hospitals grapple with ongoing staff shortages.

Clarke, alongside Sanford D. Bishop Jr., Maria Elvira Salazar, and Mike Lawler, on Tuesday unveiled the H–1Bs for Physicians and the Healthcare Workforce Act. The bill seeks to exempt physicians and other healthcare professionals from a new US$100,000 fee attached to certain H-1B visa petitions.

The legislation also aims to block any additional fee increases beyond those already established under existing U.S. immigration law.

The move follows a coordinated effort by Clarke and Lawler, who previously led 100 members of Congress in urging the Department of Homeland Security to exclude healthcare workers from the fee requirement.

Lawmakers say the proposal comes at a critical time, as workforce shortages continue to strain hospitals and health systems across the United States.

“As they are in so many areas across our society and economy, immigrant Americans remain indispensable assets to keeping our hospitals and health systems running steadily, efficiently, and effectively. The bipartisan willingness to ensure migrant health care workers are exempt from the $100,000 fee for H-1B petitions stands as a testament to the widely accepted value and necessity of these workers in one of this country’s most vital, yet vulnerable sectors. I am proud to co-lead this effort to prevent dangerous workforce shortages from impacting the health and well-being of Americans, as well as to ensure that those who are willing to contribute their expertise and talents to our nation can continue to do so at the times when we most need them,” said Congresswoman Clarke, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica.

Supporters of the bill argue that the U.S. healthcare system is heavily reliant on the H-1B visa programme, particularly in rural and underserved communities. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, nearly 87 million Americans live in areas with insufficient access to medical professionals.

The proposed legislation would exempt healthcare workers, as defined under the Affordable Care Act, from the $100,000 fee introduced under a September 2025 presidential proclamation. It would also prohibit any new H-1B-related fees exceeding those outlined in the U.S. Code.

Healthcare leaders have warned that the fee hike could worsen existing staffing challenges and limit access to care.

“The H-1B visa program helps ensure that New York hospitals can deliver world-class health care, train the next generation of physicians, and conduct cutting-edge research. The $100,000 filing fee for H-1B visa petitions poses a grave threat to this critical mission. It will further strain hospitals financially, exacerbate ongoing workforce shortages, and diminish access to care. The H-1B Visas for Physicians and the Healthcare Workforce Act will eliminate this onerous fee and ensure that hospitals can continue to care for their communities. I thank Representatives Lawler, Clarke, Salazar, and Bishop for their commitment to strengthening the health care workforce,” said Kenneth E. Raske, President of the Greater New York Hospital Association.

Additional support came from American Academy of Neurology President Natalia S. Rost, who pointed to long-term workforce concerns.

“This bill would also prevent any new increases in H-1B filing fees, capping costs at a maximum of $1,500 for employers as outlined in section 214(c)(9)(B) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. As baby boomers continue to age and health care demands rise alongside continued population growth, reports have shown a projected shortfall of nearly 86,000 physicians by 2036, underscoring the need for a robust health care workforce. In the absence of additional Medicare-funded GME slots, highly trained international medical graduates (IMGs) have historically played a critical role in filling these workforce gaps,” Rost said.

If passed, the bill would offer relief to hospitals and healthcare providers that depend on foreign-trained medical professionals, while aiming to prevent further strain on an already stretched system.

Rowley calls Trinidad PM Persad-Bissessar ‘jamette’ amid escalating political clash

PM Keith Rowley speaks on Warner’s extradition issue
Trinidad PM Dr. Keith Rowley

Former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has labelled Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar a “jamette” for failing to provide evidence to support allegations that the People’s National Movement (PNM) is involved in criminal activity.

Rowley made the remarks during a news conference at his Glencoe home yesterday, responding to statements delivered by Persad-Bissessar in Parliament on Friday following her trip to the United States.

He said he tuned in to the parliamentary proceedings in anticipation of what had been billed as an important statement. During that address, Persad-Bissessar alleged that the PNM constructed its headquarters, Balisier House on Tranquillity Street in Port of Spain, using funds from narco-traffickers. She also accused the party of links to paedophiles.

In response, Rowley defended his tenure and long-standing involvement with the party.

“I led the PNM. I joined the PNM in 1974. I held high office in the PNM from 1987. I served the PNM in opposition and in government as minister of government, and I led the party for 15 years,” he said.

He then sharply criticised the prime minister’s claims.

“When the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago goes to the Parliament and says that work that took place in Balisier House under my stewardship was funded by narco-terrorists, I want to say to Mrs Kamla Persad, the predecessor today, I told this country before that you are a jamette.

“If (Persad-Bissessar) can’t come in front of me and show me an iota of evidence to support that allegation, I say again that we are unfortunate to have a jamette as the prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

“Because only a jamette will do something like that, make a statement like that, and not be able to provide a modicum of proof or truth to support it. You will go inside the Parliament and say that, and accuse the PNM of paedophilia. You support the policies of Washington? Are you supporting the Epstein Files being given?” the former prime minister questioned.

Rowley also sought to turn attention to allegations involving members of the ruling United National Congress (UNC), referencing events surrounding the 2025 general election.

He recalled that the sitting Member of Parliament for Sangre Grande (Toco/Sangre Grande MP and Defence Minister Wayne Sturge) was associated with an individual who had been detained during a previous state of emergency.

“There was a particular gentleman who was a mover and shaker against us in that campaign. Literally, the wings beneath which the UNC candidate flew. He’s a minister. We had a period of state of emergency here, and the reason given then to the President was that a minister’s life was being threatened. That person was picked up under the powers of the state of emergency and kept until the power expired,” Rowley said.

“The person came out from there, we had another state of emergency, and then the person is executed in Sangre Grande in broad daylight. This Government, this UNC, wants us to believe that there’s no connection between that period of history and that incident in Sangre Grande,” he added.

Rowley was referring to the murder of businessman Danny Guerra, who was shot dead by two masked gunmen last Friday as he left his business, DG Homes.

Rowley also warned of the potential international implications of such claims.

“So, you eh care that you are damaging the country’s image with this lie. The Prime Minister is telling the Parliament that the previous prime minister was engaged with narco-traffickers,” he said.

Bahamas moves to shield consumers from rising energy and food costs

Climate change leaves the Bahamas with huge debt, country seeks help
Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis.

Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis says The Bahamas is taking steps to cushion the impact of rising global oil prices, as conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about economic fallout in import-dependent countries.

In a national statement, Davis acknowledged growing public anxiety about whether the situation abroad could affect daily life at home, particularly through higher fuel and food costs.

“I know that many Bahamians are watching events unfold in the Middle East and wondering whether the conflict will have an impact here at home. Small countries that rely on imports, like ours, cannot entirely avoid the pressures that come with rising oil prices. I am grateful that policy changes we began to make early in our term have built more resilience into our system. In particular, our energy reforms, which include major efficiency gains and risk mitigation strategies, so your electricity bills – which are already lower from those changes – will not rise due to the current crisis.”

Davis noted that increases in global energy prices typically drive up shipping and transportation costs, which can then be reflected in the price of essential goods.

“When energy prices rise, shipping and transport costs go up, and we are concerned that those increases will eventually show up in the price of groceries and other essentials.”

He said the government is taking proactive steps to ease the burden on households, including engagement with the private sector ahead of a planned tax adjustment.

“This afternoon I will meet with the Retailers Association, so that we can work together, ahead of the April 1 VAT reduction on food, to bring costs down for Bahamian families.”

The prime minister also stressed that the government will continue to monitor both geopolitical developments and their economic implications.

“We will continue to actively monitor developments in the conflict and in energy markets. Too many Bahamian families are already struggling with the cost of living, and reducing those burdens remains a priority.”

Beyond international concerns, Davis pointed to potential regional security risks, particularly involving Cuba.

“Problems closer to home also have the potential to affect us; the Royal Bahamas Defence Force is on alert with respect to a difficult situation in Cuba.”

He added that maritime surveillance has been heightened across key areas of the country.

“From Great Bahama Bank to Cay Sal Bank and to Anguilla Cay, we are actively monitoring our maritime space. Our assets remain in the southern Bahamas, and we are working closely with the United States Coast Guard and other partners in the region.”

Davis highlighted a series of policy initiatives undertaken in recent years that he said have strengthened the country’s ability to withstand external shocks.

“Over the last several years, we began a major transformation of the nation’s electricity grid, we made significant investments in national security, we worked hard to strengthen our country’s diplomatic relationships, and we invested in our country’s food security.”

“These are serious times, but these policies have left us better prepared to face the risks and challenges that confront us.”

He emphasized the importance of continued resilience-building, noting that many Bahamians support efforts to reduce vulnerability to global disruptions.

“I know Bahamians agree that it’s critical for our country to continue building resilience and reducing our exposure to external shocks.”

“We will keep you updated as further developments arise, as we walk this path together.”

St Lucia says no formal agreement with Cuba despite presence of health workers

St. Lucia Prime Minister

The St Lucia government has moved to clarify its relationship with Cuba, maintaining that there is no formal agreement in place for the provision of medical personnel, even as Cuban health workers continue to operate in the country.

Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre addressed the issue during a press briefing, pushing back against suggestions that the government has entered into a contractual arrangement with Havana.

“We do not have any agreement with the Cuban government and doctors. We have no agreement. We have no signed agreement for doctors with the Cuban government. Let me say it again, we have no signed agreement as we speak with the Cuban government for the provision of any doctors,” he said.

Pierre explained that Cuban doctors currently working in St Lucia are employed directly by the Ministry of Health and are treated the same as other medical professionals.

According to Pierre, the Cuban doctors currently employed in St Lucia are engaged directly by the Ministry of Health and “get paid like regular doctors”. He added that any future arrangement “depends on the supply and demand”, but reiterated that there is “no written agreement with the Cuban government as it is to doctors who are working here or the medical personnel who are working here”.

The prime minister said the information had been relayed to him by the Ministry of Health, stressing once more “that there is no signed agreement… People who are working here are working like regular doctors, getting paid … as regular health personnel”.

The clarification comes at a time when several Caribbean governments are reassessing their longstanding participation in Cuba’s medical brigade programme, which has faced increasing scrutiny from the United States.

Washington has urged regional governments to withdraw from the programme, arguing that Cuba’s deployment of medical staff overseas amounts to exploitation. American officials have alleged that Cuban health workers are subjected to “withheld wages, confiscated passports, forced family separation and exile, restriction of movement through curfews and surveillance, intimidation and threats, and even pressure to falsify medical records and fabricate procedures”. The US position also highlights concerns about excessive working hours and unsafe conditions.

For now, St Lucia maintains that its Cuban medical personnel are simply employees of the national health system. Whether that arrangement evolves into a more formal agreement, Pierre indicated, remains uncertain.

Big Blue & You to host ‘Art by the Sea’ Festival for World Water Day in Miami Beach

Ocean conservation nonprofit Big Blue & You will mark World Water Day with the return of its “Art by the Sea” Youth Arts Festival on Sunday, March 22, bringing together art, science and youth-led environmental advocacy along South Florida’s coastline.

The free, family-friendly event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Miami Beach Bandshell and is open to the public. Organizers say the festival is designed to engage young people—particularly those from underrepresented communities—through hands-on learning, storytelling and creative expression centered on ocean conservation.

The event will be hosted by co-founder Danni Washington alongside youth co-host Soleil River Nation, an 11-year-old actor and musician who is also scheduled to perform original songs focused on protecting the planet and its oceans.

“Art by the Sea creates an entry point for young people to see themselves as part of the ocean’s story,” Washington said. “By merging art, science, and culture, we make environmental engagement accessible, joyful, and deeply rooted in community.”

Co-founder and executive director Michelle Swaby-Smith said the festival continues to serve as a platform for youth empowerment and environmental education.

“We are incredibly excited about the resurgence of Art by the Sea this year,” she said. “As a free community event, it has inspired, educated, and ignited young people across South Florida. This festival reflects our mission of cultivating conscious ocean conservation activism—with youth leading the charge.”

Attendees will have access to a wide range of interactive exhibits and demonstrations led by environmental organizations and marine science groups. Activities include mangrove protection demonstrations, coral reef education, shark science workshops and sea turtle conservation presentations. Participants can also take part in hands-on water quality testing and interactive learning games focused on local ecosystems such as Biscayne Bay.

Creative programming will feature live art installations, painting stations and collaborative mural projects led by local artists and environmental educators. Guests can design ocean-inspired wearable art, craft model sea creatures and contribute to community art pieces throughout the day.

The festival will also include live entertainment, with DJ sets, dance performances, a parade featuring stilt walkers and drummers, and mindfulness sessions. Ocean-based activities are also planned, including free swim lessons and paddleboarding, along with potential wildlife engagement experiences led by conservation groups.

Attendees can also enjoy the Mocha Mermaid Photobooth, where they can “Step Into Your Mermaid Power,” sustainability demonstrations, and exciting giveaways and raffles from community partners. There will also be a cozy reading corner, thanks to Miami-Dade Library, with readings from two featured authors, including Marine Biologist Carlee Jackson and youth author Emiliana Fuger.

Founded in 2008, Big Blue & You is the first ocean conservation nonprofit established by African American women. The organization focuses on intersectional environmentalism and works to equip young leaders—especially young women of color—with STEAM-based tools for ocean advocacy while expanding access to outdoor spaces.

Organizers say the festival aims to provide an inclusive space where attendees of all ages can connect with the environment in meaningful and engaging ways.

Why turbo mode disposables vapes deliver better results for long puff sessions

Compact vape devices offer immense convenience and simple carry for daily use across busy routines. Each draw feels steady and smooth, which creates a vapor feel from start to finish. The right product shapes comfort, flavor, and habits, which helps readers connect with this topic. In this context, trusted online stores offer tested items that match user needs.

Popular choices such as Lost Mary MT35000 turbo flavors demonstrate how variety shapes vape appeal. High puff limits and steady power help users trust these devices for long daily sessions. Long draw users seek bold flavor, strong battery life, and simple use without constant replacement. This article breaks down key traits to help you select devices that match long puff habits.

Massive Puff Capacity That Keeps On Going

For heavy users who favor long draws, a device with 35,000 puffs feels like true companionship. Such endurance avoids the hassle of frequent replacements or constant searches for another unit during use. Reliable suppliers ensure that a high puff count matches intense usage without real compromise. With that much capacity, long sessions feel comfortable and uninterrupted across busy daily routines for users.

Rechargeable Battery And Easy Power Management

A strong rechargeable battery around 800 mAh supports repeated long puffs without a sudden power drop. The USB-C fast charge design from online shops allows quick top-ups when the battery is low. This battery capacity keeps the device ready for use across extended days of steady demand cycles. Such power support helps each session feel smooth and dependable, even during frequent daily use periods.

Dual Power Modes For Custom Vapor Intensity

Two modes, normal and turbo, provide flexibility for gentle draws or dense vapor on demand. This variety from popular brands helps users shift style with mood. The advanced output delivers richer vapor strength that suits long, deep draws that many users sometimes prefer. Such control adds a level of personal choice that simpler disposable designs rarely manage well alone.

Transparent E-Liquid Tank To Track Juice Levels

The inclusion of a clear juice tank allows users to see how much liquid remains at any time. Trusted reviews on popular online sites mention this as a major plus over opaque disposables that hide juice until late. Visible juice helps avoid dry draws and surprise empty hits as a perk for puff users. It simply adds convenience and confidence during long usage periods for users who value daily control.

Dual Mesh Coil And Smooth Vapor For Full-Bodied Flavor

A dual mesh coil delivers even heat and stable vapor from the first puff to last. This advanced coil setup boosts user satisfaction as it keeps flavor strength and vapor depth steady across many draws. For those who favor long puffs, such steady output matters far more than short flavor bursts. The result stays smooth, rich, and satisfying across long sessions with consistent taste.

Flavor Variety That Keeps Each Session Fresh

With many flavor options from fruity to minty to sweet, long-term users rarely feel bored. Switch the options often so each session feels different and enjoyable even after heavy daily use periods. This flexibility makes long-puff devices more appealing for regular users who value taste change and satisfaction. Trusted online sites note that variety helps prevent flavor fatigue when users rely on one device daily.

These modern devices suit heavy users who value stable output, clean taste, and fewer swaps. Branded options, such as Lost Mary MT35000 turbo flavors, show bold taste with steady power lifespan. Focus on daily comfort, clear choices, and fair value to guide buyers toward smarter long-term picks. So, find out the latest high-puff styles from trusted sellers and secure a better daily vape.

NBA teams ranked: Who can win the 2026 finals?

basketball

With this NBA season coming to an end, the NBA Finals 2026 is as open as it’s been in years and that’s saying something given the fact that Oklahoma City has the best record in the league presently. There’s about a month left in the regular season, but the Western Conference is incredibly tough, the Eastern Conference is dealing with serious contentions while the standings shift almost every night.

It’s been worse with the recent NBA results which have already shaken things up. On March 13, OKC beat Boston 104- 102, San Antonio surprisingly lost to Denver 136-131 the same night and the Lakers barely survived the match with Denver just two days later. For fans who follow NBA predictions closely and would like to put them to good use, it is worth checking out these fast payout online casinos.

Below, we will rank the best NBA teams right now, give a breakdown of the NBA playoff contenders, look at key players and predict who’s realistically winning the whole thing in June.

NBA Teams Ranked: Current Championship Contenders

# Team Record Recent Form Key Players Strengths Weaknesses
1 OKC Thunder 52–15 Lost to BOS 104–102 SGA, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren Best defence in NBA Injury-hit season (SGA, Holmgren, Williams all missed 10+ games)
2 San Antonio Spurs 49–18 Lost to DEN 136–131 Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper Only team in top 4 of both offensive AND defensive efficiency Zero playoff experience
3 Detroit Pistons 48–18 Beat MEM 126–110 Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson Top-2 defensive rating in the NBA Limited playoff track record
4 Boston Celtics 44–23 Beat WAS 111–100 Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White Championship experience; top-3 offensive efficiency Vucevic out until April with broken finger; Tatum still building fitness
5 Cleveland Cavaliers 41–26 Beat DAL 138–105 Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley Experienced playoff team Questions over NBA march forecasts ceiling in a deep West/East bracket
6 Los Angeles Lakers 42–25 Beat DEN 127–125 in OT Luka Doncic, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves Luka has been averaging 31+ pts since the All-Star break Injury history

Looking at the current standings, recent form, key players and the strengths and weaknesses of each team, here’s how the NBA teams ranked as of mid March 2026. There are also NBA march forecasts that offer interesting takes on how the Finals will go.

OKC have the best record in the NBA currently, their defence remains topnotch and their depth is unmatched. NBA results have shown that despite not having a fully healthy roster due to SGA missing 12 games, Holmgren missing 10 and Williams, Hartenstein and Mitchell missing 20+ games combined, they still made it work.

San Antonio holds the second best record in basketball. Among the NBA all star teams, they are the only one to rank inside the top four in both offence and defence this season, what an achievement. The Spurs haven’t made the playoffs in six years but fortunately Wembanyama changed the rules.

The Detroit Pistons have refused to budge from the top position of the Eastern Conference since week one. They lead the league in steals (10.6) and blocks (6.3) per game. Their team which is part of the best NBA team right now is built on their defence. The risk though is that they’ve never done this in a long playoff run.

Boston went 23-9 since the beginning of this year even before Tatum returned from his Achilles injury. Jalyen Brown has also been playing 29.3 points per game. Now with the return of Tatum, Celtics now rank top 3 in offense.

NBA Playoffs Rankings and Current Standings

This is the NBA playoffs rankings in both conferences as of March 15, 2026.

From the current standings, the West is the tighter conference from seeds 3 to 6. LAL, HOU, MIN and DEN are all within two games of each other. In the East, the real drama is in seeds 5-8 with Miami’s recent surge.

Eastern Conference

Seed Team W–L   Recent Result & Standing Impact
1 Detroit Pistons 48–18   Beat MEM 126–110 (Mar 14). Extended No. 1 cushion. Pistons haven’t lost more than 2 in a row all season.
2 Boston Celtics 44–23   Beat WAS 111–100 (Mar 14). Tatum’s return pushed Boston up — won 5 of the last 6.
3 New York Knicks 43–25   Beat IND 101–92 (Mar 14). Knicks quietly on a 7–3 run in last 10 games.
4 Cleveland Cavaliers 41–26   Beat DAL 138–105 (Mar 14) — blowout. Mitchell and Garland both 25+ points.
5 Orlando Magic 38–28   Lost to MIA 121–117 (Mar 15). Miami now just 1 back.
6 Miami Heat 38–30   Beat MIL 112–105 (Mar 13), then beat ORL 121–117 (Mar 15). Miami surging at the right time.

Western Conference

Seed Team W–L Recent Result & Standing Impact
1 Oklahoma City Thunder 52–15 Beat BOS 104–102 (Mar 13). OKC are 77% favourites.
2 San Antonio Spurs 49–18 Lost to DEN 136–131 (Mar 13), bounced back beating CHA 115–102 (Mar 14). Still 2nd comfortably.
3 Los Angeles Lakers 42–25 Beat DEN 127–125 OT on Luka buzzer-beater (Mar 15). The huge win keeps them 1 game clear of Houston.
4 Houston Rockets 41–25 Beat NOP 107–105 (Mar 14). Houston stayed right in the 3/4 seed race.
5 Minnesota Timberwolves 41–26 Lost to GSW 127–117 (Mar 14). Small slip, still only 1 game off 4th.
6 Denver Nuggets 41–27 Beat SAS 136–131 (Mar 13), lost to LAL 125–127 OT (Mar 15). Win-loss swings keep them in play-in.

NBA Playoff Contenders: Teams With the Best Title Chances

Now the golden question is who among the NBA playoff contenders actually has a clear path to the finals? Let’s take a look at the top contenders:

Oklahoma City Thunder

OKC has the best chance right now.

  • They have the best record in the NBA and SGA is the most reliable closer in the league currently
  • Their depth is extraordinary, they have weathered more injuries than most teams yet still kept winning.
  • NBA playoff predictions show that they are hard to beat and they have the numbers to show for it.
  • The only concern is if they will enter the playoffs at full strength

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs are not doing bad at all, in fact, they are giving OKC a tough time.

  • They’ve beaten OKC four times in five meetings this season. This is the most any team has beaten the Thunder.
  • They are the only league with offensive and defensive efficiency.
  • Victor Wembanyama is a generational talent who has taken the Spurs as far as top four this season.
  • If the young guards improve their three-point shooting before the playoffs then they have a good shot at winning the finals.

Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics are not to be underestimated as worthy contenders of the NBA Finals.

  • They won a championship just recently
  • Brown is currently playing the best ball of his career and Tatum just returned to the team
  • Boston has plenty of championship experience which can give them an edge in the Finals.

Detroit Pistons

Detroit has been showing up all season and if they continue this way, they are worthy contenders to watch out for.

  • They haven’t lost more than two consecutive games at any point. One for the three NBA teams to do that throughout the season.
  • Cade Cunningham is maturing as a Finals caliber point guard
  • Their biggest test is the seven game playoff series against the Celtics or Spurs will show whether they can win or not.

Key Players Influencing the Title Race

These star players in the NBA all star teams this season are the ones that will define the postseason. Here are the players who matter most.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC Thunder)

SGA has been performing great this season. He recently broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record for consecutive games scoring 20-plus points. He’s on the way to bagging his second consecutive MVP award. Gilgeous‑Alexander himself is part of a growing trend of NBA talent with Caribbean ties, similar to VJ Edgecombe being selected third overall in the 2025 NBA Draft.

His mid-range shooting and foul drawing are matchup proof and is the kind of skill that gets better even when there’s pressure. His growth has only made the Thunder harder to stop.

Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs)

Wembanyama always leads the NBA playoffs rankings conversation every night he plays. He averages 24.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and leads the entire league when it comes to blocks. He is the points, rebounds and assists leader for his own team. Just recently, Wembanyama produced a combination never seen in NBA history. In a 16-game stretch, he posted 377 points, 179 rebounds and 61 blocks. During one of his interviews with reporters, he had said, “It’s the best example that life is short. Career is short. It can end just like this. So there’s no time to waste.”

Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics)

Brown averages 29.3 points per game. He’s the team’s leading scorer in the absence of Tatum. Boston’s title lean on how well he performs in a playoff series. Alongside Derrick White’s consistent solid defence, his skills are a major reason why the Celtics are still standing.

Latest NBA Results and Their Impact on the Finals Race

The latest NBA results have shown us clearly who is rising, who is wobbling and who is actually in form for the Finals. The OKC vs Boston result is actually the most significant.

If these two meet in the Finals, the game can be really tight. San Antonio’s loss to Denver is just their third in the last 18 games and Luka’s buzzer-beater has successfully kept the Lakers in the thick of the West seeding race.

The games have also shown that momentum can change even when it’s late into the season, this means that teams fighting for seedling must keep winning consistently because just a short losing streak can change the NBA playoffs rankings.

Why football fans in Myanmar download apps during AFC and World Cup Qualifiers

Football is one of the most well-liked sports in Myanmar, and it has continued to grow in popularity due to the increasing number of international football tournaments (e.g., qualifying for the World Cup & qualifying for the AFC). Fans are now using the greater accessibility of mobile apps to enhance their football viewing experience. In addition to real-time match information, fans may use mobile apps to predict the result of a football game, as well as place wagers on the result of that game – enhancing the overall viewing experience. Today, the vast majority of fans in Myanmar are utilizing mobile apps to keep themselves informed about football games and to become involved with football in a manner they were previously unable to be.

Why Football Fans in Myanmar Download Apps During AFC and World Cup Qualifiers

Fans in Myanmar download football apps during the AFC and World Cup qualifiers for a number of reasons. One of the most commonly used apps to obtain live scores and make bets during critical moments of the match is the Melbet Myanmar app download. First and foremost, the apps allow fans to get live updates, along with statistics from each match, which creates a more engaging experience for fans who are able to view the live match or for those fans who are unable to view the live match but wish to remain informed about the live match and the status of their team. Additionally, although fans may be unable to view the live match, the apps will continue to update fans on the live match in real-time, thus allowing fans to remain connected with the action and the status of their team.

Additionally, some apps contain additional features that allow fans to engage with football in an additional manner by offering betting features. For example, fans may be able to make wagers on a wide array of items, including match results, goal scorers, and other related outcomes. Thus, the combination of live updates and wagering opportunities makes mobile apps appealing to fans of football in Myanmar during major tournaments such as the AFC and World Cup qualifiers.

The Growing Popularity of Football Betting Apps

Mobile football betting apps are growing in popularity among fans of football in Myanmar during the AFC and World Cup qualifiers. Mobile football betting apps enable fans to experience a more interactive football experience and thus to experience football in a more meaningful and deeper way. There are several factors contributing to this increasing trend:

  • More Involvement: Wagering on the outcome of a match enables fans to become more emotionally invested in the match. Each goal or missed opportunity becomes more significant and more interesting because a wager was made.
  • Various Wagering Options: Fans are allowed to select from a variety of wagers, including match winner, final score, and player events. A variety of wagering options allows fans to engage with football in multiple ways.
  • Promotional Offers Exclusive to Major Tournaments: Most mobile apps provide bonuses and special promotions associated with major tournaments, such as the AFC and World Cup qualifiers.

Two Key Factors Contributing to the Growth of Football Betting in Myanmar

The growth of football betting in Myanmar is primarily due to two main causes: the widespread availability of technology and the increased availability of internet access. Today’s mobile betting apps are designed with user-friendly interfaces that make it easy for both novice and experienced users to navigate and utilize. An example of a user-friendly interface is the Melbet Myanmar app, which provides a straightforward process for fans to place bets on live matches. At the same time, there is an abundance of low-cost smartphones and reliable internet service available to fans, enabling more fans to access these services during large tournaments.

Technological Advancements and User-Friendly Interfaces

Today’s mobile betting platforms focus on ease of use and convenience. The clear design and intuitive navigation of these platforms allow all users to participate regardless of experience level. Therefore, this has added to the increasing popularity of such apps, particularly during major events such as the AFC and World Cup qualifiers.

Increased Internet Accessibility

The proliferation of broadband internet in Myanmar has been a primary factor supporting the development of mobile betting apps. The increasing availability of low-cost smartphones and reliable internet access has enabled more fans to download apps, receive match updates, and place wagers in real time.

Football Betting & Economy in Myanmar

Football betting via mobile betting applications during major tournaments has had an impact on the economy of Myanmar due to the large increase in mobile betting applications for sports events during the major tournament seasons. Additionally, as fans are able to become more involved with football, it creates additional business opportunities for application developers, payment service providers, and internet service providers. As the demand for such services increases, this will also contribute to the expansion of the local digital sector.
In addition, through the global exposure created from the AFC and World Cup Qualifiers, there is the potential for sponsorships and partnerships for football, which can create additional exposure and solidify football’s position in Myanmar.

Mobile Sports Betting Applications Rise in Myanmar

The number of football fans in Myanmar using mobile betting applications continues to increase throughout the AFC and World Cup Qualifier seasons. In comparison to other types of gambling products available to consumers, mobile betting applications have been successful in attracting users primarily because they allow customers to receive live data updates while providing multiple betting options and special promotions, etc., to their users. Because of the rapid development of technology and the widespread availability of internet access, mobile betting applications allow fans to experience football more interactively and more engagingly than ever before during major tournament events.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear challenge over Haiti TPS termination in April

Haitian American Professionals Coalition responds to TPS termination

Hours after Haitian immigrants challenging the potential termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) warned that deportations could return them to a country engulfed in violence and instability, the United States Supreme Court announced it will hear oral arguments in the case in April.

In early Monday filings, attorneys representing Haitian TPS holders urged the justices to reject the government’s emergency request to end the program while their lawsuit continues. They argued that deporting beneficiaries now could expose them to serious harm in Haiti’s worsening humanitarian conditions.

Haitian TPS holders fighting to keep their legal protections told the court that deportation could send them back into a country gripped by extreme violence and instability. Hours later, the justices issued an unsigned order stating they would hear arguments in the case rather than grant the Trump administration’s emergency request to terminate TPS for Haiti.

In the filings, attorneys argued that forcing the estimated 350,000 Haitian immigrants enrolled in the program to return home could put their lives at risk. Lawyers in Miot v. Trump, the 2025 lawsuit seeking to preserve TPS for Haitians, said deportations could place individuals directly in the path of a humanitarian crisis driven by gang violence and political collapse.

They described Haiti as “a maelstrom of disease, poverty, violence (including sexual violence) and death,” noting that armed gangs now control large portions of the capital and have displaced more than one million people.

“The government identifies no emergency requiring their immediate expulsion,” their March 16 brief states. “Because they are important and complex, the questions presented are best decided in the normal course after the court of appeals has addressed them.

“The Court should therefore deny the government’s application for certiorari before judgment [and] should deny the government’s application in full.”

Later that afternoon, the Supreme Court said it would take up the case and consolidate it with a similar challenge involving Syria’s TPS designation. The court’s decision leaves in place lower court rulings that have temporarily preserved protections for both groups.

Arguments are scheduled for the second week of the Court’s April 2026 session, with a decision expected before the end of the term in May or June.

More than 352,000 Haitians currently live and work in the United States under TPS, which allows nationals of countries facing extraordinary conditions to remain temporarily and obtain work authorization.

Haiti was first designated for TPS in 2010 following a devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people. The designation has been extended repeatedly amid ongoing political instability, natural disasters and escalating gang violence.

In November, however, the Department of Homeland Security announced plans to terminate Haiti’s TPS designation effective February 3, even as legal challenges remained ongoing. Lower courts reviewing the case have acknowledged the potential consequences, including the “risk of detention and deportation, separation from family members, and loss of work authorization.”

US government offers $2,600 ‘exit bonus’ to Jamaicans for voluntary departure

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a high-visibility social media campaign specifically designed to reach undocumented Jamaicans living in the U.S., with an offer of a $2,600 “exit bonus” and free airfare to return home.

The advertisements, which have appeared extensively on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), use nostalgic travel-poster aesthetics and phrases such as “Fly to Jamaica for Free” to encourage voluntary departure. This effort is part of a broader $200 million global marketing strategy under the department’s “Project Homecoming,” which has deployed similar targeted ads for undocumented nationals from India, Mexico, and Guatemala.

The program addresses a significant demographic within the United States. According to 2023 data from the Center for Migration Studies, there are approximately 87,300 undocumented Jamaican nationals currently residing in the U.S. These individuals form part of a larger Caribbean undocumented population estimated at 473,000.

Most Jamaican nationals in the U.S. are concentrated in Florida and New York, states that are now seeing an influx of these specific DHS advertisements. Nationally, the undocumented population in the U.S. reached a record 14 million by mid-2025, prompting the current administration to seek more cost-effective removal methods.

Under the direction of the DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, the “exit bonus” was increased on January 21, 2026, from an initial $1,000 to the current $2,600. The department states that a “self-deportation” managed through the newly launched CBP Home app costs the U.S. taxpayer approximately $5,100 per person. In contrast, a traditional enforced removal is estimated to cost $18,245.

To participate, individuals must download the CBP Home app—which replaced the previous CBP One interface—and submit a “selfie” along with basic biographical details. Once vetted, participants are promised “DHS Airlines” travel arrangements within 21 days and the forgiveness of any civil fines related to their immigration status.

The Jamaican campaign is not an isolated effort. DHS has already reported that tens of thousands of individuals have utilized the app globally, contributing to what the department claims its total of 2.2 million voluntary departures since January 2025.

The administration has framed the program as a “gift” and a “dignified return,” though its primary function remains the rapid reduction of the undocumented population through financial persuasion. For those who choose not to utilize the app, Secretary Noem the DHS has warned of “strict enforcement and penalties,” including permanent bans on future re-entry to the United States.

Smart investing strategies for long-term wealth growth

Smart investing for long-term wealth growth starts with clarity and a plan, especially for business owners juggling growth, cash flow, and the temptation to reinvest every dollar back into operations. Many entrepreneurs begin by exploring how to invest 10k in real estate as a tangible way to diversify beyond their core business while keeping capital relatively accessible.

This article lays out a practical framework that blends classic portfolio theory with entrepreneur-focused tactics: goal-setting, a core-satellite portfolio, diversification beyond public markets, risk controls tailored to business balance sheets, and disciplined execution habits. The guidance is pragmatic and actionable, helping busy marketers, ecommerce founders, and agencies make decisions that compound personal wealth without undermining business priorities.

Set Clear Financial Goals And Assess Your Starting Point

Determine clear financial objectives before allocating capital. A crisp starting point reduces emotional decision-making and aligns investment actions with the business roadmap.

Determine Your Time Horizon And Risk Tolerance

Time horizon drives asset choices. If an entrepreneur plans to exit or sell a business in 3–5 years, conservative positioning for that portion of capital is prudent: funds earmarked for retirement 20–30 years away can tolerate higher equity exposure. Risk tolerance should reflect both personal temperament and business cyclicality: someone with stable recurring revenue can accept more market volatility than a founder with one-season sales spikes. Quantify risk with scenarios, what portfolio drawdown can the owner tolerate without forcing a distressed business liquidity event?

Audit Cash Flow, Debt, And Emergency Reserves

A realistic cash-flow audit prevents premature selling of investments during slow months. Entrepreneurs should maintain an emergency reserve equal to at least 6–12 months of personal and business-fixed expenses, adjusted for business predictability. High-interest consumer debt should be prioritized for payoff, there’s no diversified portfolio that reliably beats double-digit credit costs after taxes. For business debt, distinguish strategic growth leverage (good) from unsustainable operating shortfalls (bad).

Define Measurable Goals Relevant To Business Owners

Translate aspirations into measurable goals: fund a 12–18 month runway, build a passive income stream covering 50% of personal expenses within five years, or accumulate a diversification pool equal to six months of payroll. Business owners should earmark capital buckets: liquidity for operations, a growth-first fund for business reinvestment, and a financial markets portfolio designed for long-term wealth growth. Clear buckets reduce conflict between reinvesting in the business and preserving personal retirement savings.

Build A Core Portfolio Foundation

A robust core portfolio provides stability and broad market exposure: satellite positions add alpha without jeopardizing the foundation.

Asset Allocation: Balancing Stocks, Bonds, And Alternatives

Strategic asset allocation remains the primary determinant of long-term returns and volatility. A typical starter allocation for a long-horizon investor could be 60% equities, 30% bonds, 10% alternatives, but business owners may tilt to 50/35/15 for added downside protection. Allocation should be revisited when major life or business events occur (exit, acquisition, catastrophic revenue loss).

Passive Core: Index Funds, ETFs, And Target-Date Funds

Low-cost index funds and ETFs form the heart of the core. They offer market exposure, low turnover, and minimal fees, critical when compounding returns over decades. Target-date funds are useful for completely hands-off investors, though active customization often benefits entrepreneurs who want control over tax placement and sector exposure.

Satellite Positions: Growth, Value, And Thematic Bets

Satellite holdings are the place for selective bets: high-conviction growth stocks, value opportunities after market dislocations, or thematic allocations (AI infrastructure, ecommerce logistics) that complement the owner’s industry expertise. Keep satellites small relative to the core, typically 5–15%, to preserve overall portfolio balance.

Tax-Advantaged Accounts And Tax-Efficient Placement

Maximizing retirement accounts (IRAs, 401(k)s, SEP IRAs) reduces tax drag. Place income-generating, high-tax assets (REITs, bonds) into tax-advantaged accounts and keep tax-efficient equities or ETFs in taxable accounts. Entrepreneurs who work with advisors and CPAs can carry out tax-loss harvesting and account-level strategies that materially increase net returns.

Diversification And Correlation Management

True diversification reduces correlated risk, especially important for owners whose business exposure already concentrates in one sector.

Optimize Across Geographies, Sectors, And Asset Types

Geographic diversification cushions against localized recessions or policy shifts. Sector diversification helps when an owner’s business is concentrated (e.g., ecommerce): complementary allocations, healthcare, utilities, international emerging markets, lower portfolio cyclicality. Mixing equities with fixed income and alternatives further flattens correlation during stress.

Using Real Estate, Commodities, And Private Investments To Reduce Concentration

Non-public assets, direct real estate, commodities like gold or energy, and selective private equity or venture stakes, offer low correlation to public markets. For an entrepreneur, real estate can also be a way to shift business-sourced cash into an income-producing asset class. These investments require due diligence and a longer lockup horizon but can materially reduce portfolio concentration risk when sized appropriately.

Practical Risk Management For Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs face intertwined personal and business risks: risk management must protect both balance sheets.

Protecting Personal And Business Balance Sheets

Segregating personal and business assets via proper entity structure (LLC, S-corp, C-corp) helps limit liability. Maintain adequate operating capital and avoid personal guarantees on excessive business loans whenever possible. Establishing separate bank accounts and clear accounting reduces the chance that business cash needs will force liquidation of long-term investments.

Downside Protection Techniques: Stop-Loss, Hedging, And Cash Allocation

Stop-loss orders and options hedges can reduce tail risk, though they carry costs and complexity. For many entrepreneurs, a simpler approach is holding a strategic cash buffer, liquidity that can be deployed opportunistically or used to ride out downturns without selling core positions. When markets are volatile, short-duration bonds and high-quality municipals can preserve capital while generating modest yield.

Insurance, Entity Structure, And Succession Considerations

Appropriate insurance (key-person, liability, property) safeguards the business and its value. Succession planning and buy-sell agreements ensure continuity and preserve wealth upon an owner’s exit or unexpected event. These legal and insurance tools are as important as investment allocation when protecting long-term wealth.

Execution Strategies To Grow Wealth Consistently

Execution discipline turns strategy into compounding results.

Dollar-Cost Averaging, Lump-Sum Investing, And Opportunistic Buys

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) reduces timing risk and smooths entries during volatile periods, useful when cash flow is irregular. Lump-sum investing tends to outperform on average but comes with higher short-term drawdown risk. Entrepreneurs can combine approaches: DCA for predictable monthly allocations, lump-sum for windfalls or liquidity events, and opportunistic buys after market corrections.

Rebalancing With Intention: When And How To Reset Allocations

Periodic rebalancing, quarterly or annually, keeps the risk profile intact. Rebalancing should be intentional: harvest gains from overheated sectors and redeploy into underweighted areas using tax-aware methods. For entrepreneurs, aligning rebalancing with business cycles (post-quarterly close) can reduce operational disruptions.

Reinvesting Cash Flow And Compounding Returns

Reinvest dividends and interest to harness compounding. For business owners, directing a portion of profits to consistently fund investments accelerates wealth building without relying solely on external capital markets.

Cost Control: Minimizing Fees, Taxes, And Slippage

Fees and tax inefficiencies compound against returns. Prefer low-cost ETFs and negotiate management fees with advisors where possible. Use limit orders to reduce slippage and consult a CPA for tax strategies like Roth conversions or qualified business income planning to retain more of the portfolio’s growth.

Investing As A Business Owner: Funding Growth Without Overleveraging

Balancing investment in the business with personal portfolio growth requires discipline and a framework.

Prioritizing Investments In Your Business Versus Financial Markets

The highest-return investment is often the business itself, if returns exceed the expected market return after adjusting for risk. Owners should set thresholds: reinvest in the business when incremental ROI exceeds a conservative market benchmark: otherwise, allocate to diversified markets. This avoids overconcentration in a single economic exposure.

Using Profits To Build Passive Income Streams (Real Estate, Dividend Stocks, Royalties)

Channel a portion of profits into assets that generate passive income, rental properties, dividend-paying equities, or licensing agreements, so that over time, business income is supplemented by independent cash flow. Passive streams reduce pressure to sell the business under duress and create optionality for strategic exits.

Accessing Capital: Loans, Lines Of Credit, And Strategic Partnerships

Leverage can accelerate growth but should be used judiciously. Business lines of credit and low-interest term loans can fund expansion without diluting ownership. Strategic partnerships and revenue-based financing offer non-dilutive alternatives. The guiding principle: choose capital sources that align repayment profiles with expected revenue and that don’t imperil the owner’s personal portfolio.

Behavioral Rules And Discipline To Stay The Course

Behavioral discipline often separates successful long-term investors from the rest.

Avoiding Emotional Decisions And Market Timing Traps

Markets are noisy, reacting to every headline erodes returns. Owners should adopt rules: no trading based on daily headlines, set predefined asset allocation ranges, and use checklists before making major portfolio moves. Keeping emotion out of investing preserves compounded gains over time.

Checklist For Quarterly And Annual Investment Reviews

Quarterly: review cash needs, performance relative to benchmarks, and whether satellite positions remain conviction-worthy. Annual: rebalance, tax-loss harvest, review estate and succession documents, and confirm insurance adequacy. Document decisions and rationale to create institutional memory that survives staffing changes or advisor turnover.

When To Consult Professionals: Financial Advisors, CPAs, And Attorneys

Engage certified professionals for complex tax strategies, estate planning, business valuation, or sophisticated hedging. Entrepreneurs benefit most from advisors who understand both financial markets and business realities, those who can integrate tax planning with investment allocation and liquidity needs.

Conclusion

Long-term wealth growth for entrepreneurs blends disciplined personal finance, a diversified core portfolio, targeted satellite bets, and business-savvy risk management. By setting measurable goals, maintaining liquidity, and executing with tax-aware discipline, business owners can compound gains without jeopardizing operational stability. The most successful approach is pragmatic: treat investing like a parallel business, measure inputs, manage risk, and iterate. That mindset, paired with the strategies outlined here, positions entrepreneurs to grow wealth steadily while fueling sustainable business success.

CWI confirms safe return of entire West Indies World Cup contingent

West Indies senior men’s cricket team 2026

After days of uncertainty and travel complications, every member of the West Indies delegation that competed at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India has safely returned home.

The confirmation came in an official statement released Saturday by Cricket West Indies, which announced that the full 26-member conting, comprising players and team management, had successfully completed their journeys back to their respective destinations across the Caribbean and beyond.

The development brings a welcome end to a tense logistical situation that left the squad stranded overseas for more than a week.

Nine days of uncertainty in Kolkata

Following the conclusion of their tournament campaign, the West Indies group remained stuck in Kolkata for nine days after regional conflict in West Asia triggered widespread disruptions to international air travel.

Chartered flights initially arranged through the International Cricket Council were ultimately canceled, forcing officials to scramble for alternative arrangements.

In the end, commercial flights were secured earlier in the week, allowing players and support staff to gradually depart India and begin the long journey home.

CWI confirms safe conclusion

In its statement, Cricket West Indies confirmed that the situation has now been fully resolved.

“Cricket West Indies wishes to advise that, as of today, Saturday, March 14, 2026, all players and members of the Team Management Unit (TMU) who were part of the West Indies men’s squad at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India have returned home safely,” the organization said.

“Following the previously outlined challenges relating to cancellations of chartered flights coordinated by the International Cricket Council (ICC), commercial travel was successfully secured for the members of the squad earlier this week. The final group of players and support staff completed their journeys over the past several days and have now safely arrived at their respective destinations.”

Appreciation for global support

CWI also acknowledged the many stakeholders who assisted in resolving the situation.

“Cricket West Indies extends its sincere appreciation to the ICC, regional cricket boards, and other stakeholders who assisted in facilitating the safe return of the team. We also thank West Indies fans and the wider cricketing community for their concern and well-wishes.”

The governing body emphasized that player safety remained the top priority throughout the ordeal.

“The well-being and safety of our players and staff remain paramount, and we are grateful that the matter has now been brought to a safe and satisfactory conclusion,” the statement added.

A challenging episode ends

With the final members of the traveling party now safely back across the region, the episode closes a difficult chapter for Caribbean cricket during the tournament.

What began as a routine departure from India turned into an extended travel ordeal, but one that ultimately ended with relief for players, officials, and fans alike throughout the West Indies.

Another Caribbean star joins PED-friendly Enhanced Games in Las Vegas

Jasmine Abrams

Guyanese sprinter Jasmine Abrams has confirmed her participation in the Enhanced Games, becoming the latest Caribbean athlete to commit to the high-profile, heavily scrutinized competition set for May in Las Vegas.

The 32-year-old Olympian represented Guyana at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and has since continued to solidify her legacy. Abrams captured silver in the 100 meters at the 2023 Pan American Games and holds the national record in the women’s 100 meters with a time of 11.07 seconds. Her performances earned her the title of Guyana’s National Sportswoman of the Year for 2023.

Caribbean contingent expands

Abrams joins a growing list of Caribbean competitors taking part in the event. Last week, Barbadian sprinter Tristan Evelyn, a two-time Olympian and national 100 meters record-holder, announced her intention to compete.

They follow in the footsteps of Shockoria Wallace and Denae McFarlane, who revealed their participation in January, signaling a growing Caribbean presence in the Las Vegas-based showcase.

The Enhanced Games have sparked widespread debate in the global sporting community. Unlike traditional competitions, the event permits athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) under medical supervision. Organizers have positioned the games as a high-stakes platform with substantial incentives, including a US$1 million bonus for breaking world records in selected disciplines.

The planned program will feature events across track and field, swimming, and weightlifting, emphasizing both spectacle and financial rewards.

Global sporting bodies raise concerns

Major international authorities have strongly criticized the initiative. Both World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and World Athletics have condemned the Enhanced Games, warning that it undermines decades of work promoting fair play and clean competition.

Participation carries potential consequences for athletes’ eligibility in sanctioned events, including the Olympic Games and other major championships, as global anti-doping codes strictly prohibit banned substances in competition.

By committing to the Enhanced Games, Abrams positions herself at the center of a growing debate on performance, risk, and reward in elite sport. For Caribbean athletics, her participation adds another chapter to a developing story of athletes navigating opportunity, controversy, and the limits of regulation on the global stage.

Julien Alfred set to chase 60m glory at World Indoor Championships in Poland

Julien Alfred

Saint Lucia’s sprint sensation Julien Alfred has officially been named by the St Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) to represent the country at next week’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń.

The 24-year-old Olympic 100m champion will aim to reclaim the 60 meters title she first captured in 2024, racing at the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena from March 20 to 22.

Record-breaking form on display

Based in Texas, Alfred enters the championships in scintillating form. She has already recorded a season-best 6.99 seconds in the 60m, making her the joint second-fastest woman in history over the distance. Impressively, she has run under seven seconds six times this season, a feat unmatched by anyone aside from world record holder Irina Privalova.

Her dominance this year positions her as a top contender to reclaim her indoor crown and continue her remarkable trajectory on the international stage.

The SLAA hailed Alfred as a symbol of national pride and a beacon for young athletes.

“Alfred continues to be a source of immense national pride, having elevated Saint Lucia’s presence on the international athletics stage through her remarkable achievements and consistent world-class performances,” said SLAA president Dora Henry.

“The World Athletics Indoor Championships present another valuable opportunity for Saint Lucia to showcase its athletic talent on the global stage. Julien continues to serve as an inspiration to a new generation of young athletes at home, and her participation at this level reflects the continued growth and potential of athletics in our country. As an association, we remain committed to supporting our athletes and providing them with the opportunities and resources necessary to compete and excel at the international level.”

Event schedule for Caribbean fans

Alfred will take to the track on Saturday, March 21, with the opening rounds set for 6:05 a.m. (Caribbean time). The semi-finals and finals will follow later the same day at 3:14 p.m. and 4:20 p.m., respectively, giving fans a full day of sprinting action to watch their Olympic champion in action.

With her world-leading times and relentless consistency, Alfred is poised to make Saint Lucia proud once again. Her participation not only highlights her personal excellence but also underscores the growing impact of Caribbean athletics on the global indoor stage.

Opinion: Why the US isn’t oil independent

Suriname and Guyana Advance Toward Joint Gas Reserve Exploitation

With the United States facing economic pressure from a potential slowdown in crude oil supply—particularly amid concerns about the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran—many are asking why the U.S. cannot rely solely on its own oil to avoid a crisis.

Roughly 20% of globally traded oil passes through the narrow passage between Iran and Oman. If it were closed for even a few weeks, energy markets worldwide would feel the impact.

However, the situation for the U.S. is more complicated than simply having large oil fields in Texas or elsewhere.

It may surprise some that the U.S. is currently the largest oil producer in the world, largely due to its focus on shale production. Output has often reached 12 to 13 million barrels per day in recent years. Yet despite this massive production, the U.S. still imports crude oil. This is because many American refineries were built decades ago to process heavier crude from countries such as Canada, Mexico and Venezuela. Since U.S. shale oil is mostly lighter crude, these refineries cannot quickly switch their configurations.

Oil is also traded on a global market. Even if the U.S. produces enough oil domestically, prices are determined internationally. If supply from the Middle East drops, prices rise everywhere.

Although Texas produces a significant share of U.S. oil, it cannot instantly replace imports due to pipeline capacity, refinery limitations and transportation constraints. Ironically, the U.S. also exports millions of barrels per day, as some countries are better equipped to process the lighter crude produced by American shale fields.

If the Strait of Hormuz were closed for an extended period, global markets would continue to feel the strain. However, the U.S. has several buffers. One of the most important is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which stores hundreds of millions of barrels of oil in underground salt caverns. These reserves can be released during supply disruptions to stabilize markets temporarily, but they are not designed to replace normal supply over the long term.

Additionally, U.S. oil producers could increase output to some extent if global prices rise. The country also benefits from substantial imports from Canada, much of which arrives via pipelines—making it more secure than shipments passing through vulnerable sea routes like the Strait of Hormuz.

Still, even if supply remains stable, consumers would likely face sharp increases in gasoline prices, along with added pressure on airlines, shipping and manufacturing. The U.S. economy would continue to function, but under strain.

The broader concern is global disruption. Major economies such as Japan, South Korea and China depend heavily on Middle Eastern oil transported through the Strait. A prolonged closure could trigger a global economic shock, affecting the U.S. through trade and financial markets.

Simply put, while the U.S. has enough resources to avoid physical shortages, it cannot isolate itself from global price swings. Even if it produced all the oil it needed, domestic prices would still track international markets. Oil companies sell to the highest bidder, meaning U.S.-produced oil can still be exported even as Americans face rising costs at home.

Oil’s role in the economy also extends far beyond gasoline. It is essential for aviation fuel, shipping and trucking, plastics and chemicals, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery. Until viable alternatives replace these uses, the economy will remain tied to global oil markets.

While the U.S. is closer to energy independence than most major economies, complete insulation from global oil shocks is nearly impossible due to the interconnected nature of markets, specialized refinery systems and widespread reliance on petroleum.

Given the potentially catastrophic consequences for the global economy, it is likely that major naval powers would move quickly to reopen the Strait if it were closed. Historically, even during periods of heightened tension, the waterway has never remained shut for long due to its critical importance.

If a disruption were prolonged, economists warn it could trigger worldwide inflation, stock market volatility and slower economic growth. Energy-intensive industries such as aviation, shipping and manufacturing would be especially hard hit.

The U.S. would be relatively insulated compared to many nations, thanks to its large domestic production, steady pipeline imports from Canada and its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Americans would likely see significantly higher gasoline prices, but not the kind of widespread fuel shortages experienced in the 1970s, when long lines stretched for blocks.

A prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz would not halt the U.S. economy—but it could send shockwaves through the entire global economic system.

Shenseea to perform at 2026 MOBO Awards

Shenseea

Dancehall star Shenseea is set to bring her signature energy to one of the United Kingdom’s biggest nights in music, having been confirmed as a performer at the upcoming MOBO Awards on March 26.

The announcement, made via the awards’ official social media platforms, has already sparked excitement among fans, particularly as this year marks the 30th staging of the prestigious ceremony. Organisers teased a standout moment for the Jamaican artiste, noting that the two-time MOBO winner “knows exactly how to light up a MOBO stage.”

Shenseea’s return to the MOBO spotlight comes as she is once again nominated in the Best Caribbean Music Act category—the same category she contested last year—highlighting her continued impact on the global music scene. Her inclusion in the performance line-up places her alongside an eclectic mix of international talent, including British-Jamaican singer Olivia Dean, R&B trio FLO, and Nigerian Afrobeats powerhouse Tiwa Savage.

The MOBO Awards have long served as a platform celebrating Black music and culture, and this year’s staging promises a blend of legacy and new-wave excellence. Among the special honourees are global music icon Pharrell Williams, who will receive the Global Songwriter Award, and hip-hop pioneer Slick Rick, set to be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Reflecting on the significance of this year’s ceremony, MOBO founder and CEO Kanya King highlighted the balance between honouring legends and spotlighting emerging forces. She emphasised that while figures like Williams and Slick Rick represent decades of influence, artists like Shenseea embody the vibrant future of Caribbean music on the world stage.

Shenseea’s inclusion in the line-up comes amid a strong year for the entertainer. She has secured five nominations at the International Reggae and World Music Awards, including Best Female DJ/Rapper and Most Popular Social Media Influencer/Entertainer.

Additionally, she earned two nods for Best Collaboration Song for “Sugar Sweet,” featuring Mariah Carey and Kehlani, and “Shake It to the Max” alongside Moliy and Skillibeng. The latter track also picked up a nomination for Best Music Video. Shenseea has also been nominated for a Snapchat award.

With Manchester set to host the milestone ceremony, anticipation is building for a night that will celebrate three decades of cultural impact. With Shenseea poised to take the stage once more, all eyes will be on the Jamaican hitmaker to deliver a performance worthy of the occasion.

Hundreds of Trinidad and Tobago nationals repatriated from UK

Hundreds of Trinidad and Tobago nationals who travelled to the United Kingdom and sought asylum have been repatriated, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers confirmed to the Trinidad Express.

Sobers said in an interview that between 90 and 97 per cent of the more than 700 nationals who had applied for asylum have returned to Trinidad over the past few months.

The developments follow the UK government’s announcement just over a year ago, on March 12, 2025, that all Trinidad and Tobago nationals would require a visa to enter the UK, even for short visits. The move was in response to a “significant increase” in nationals arriving as visitors and subsequently claiming asylum.

Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 797 asylum applications were filed by Trinidad and Tobago nationals. At the time, former Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds noted that local criminals were fleeing to the UK to avoid legal accountability, a factor cited in the introduction of the visa requirement.

An explanatory memorandum presented to the UK Parliament on March 12, 2025, highlighted the surge in claims. From the first quarter of 2023 to the fourth quarter of 2024, there were 797 claims, including dependants, compared with an annual average of 49 claims between 2015 and 2019.

The Home Office also noted that most claims were made at UK ports of entry, placing operational pressure on border staff and diverting resources from other priorities. It added that Trinidad and Tobago’s visa status would continue to be reviewed, particularly in relation to asylum claims and the internal security situation at home.

On March 5, 2026, the UK Home Office issued a Facebook update citing widespread abuse of the asylum system. The post stated that by introducing visit visas for tourists from Jordan, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Botswana, over 6,000 potential asylum claims were prevented. Nicaraguans and Saint Lucians were also added to the list of nationals now required to obtain visit visas.

Germany donates patient monitors to bolster Jamaica’s healthcare system

Jamaica has received 21 state-of-the-art patient monitors from the Federal Republic of Germany, valued at US$25,000, to support healthcare delivery across several facilities islandwide.

The devices, which track critical health indicators such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate and blood oxygen levels, are expected to strengthen patient care and monitoring capabilities within the public health system.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on March 16 at the Office of the Prime Minister in St. Andrew, Minister of Health and Wellness Christopher Tufton said the equipment will play a key role in ongoing medical procedures, particularly in areas impacted by recent damage.

“They will be utilised in procedures across the island, indeed across the five parishes where our hospitals, our health centres and equipment were badly damaged,” he said.

Dr. Tufton described the donation as “timely and necessary,” noting that the monitors will be deployed based on the most urgent needs on the ground.

“We appreciate them. Let the partnership continue and thanks to all who have been part of this process,” he added.

The donation was facilitated through the Ministry’s charitable arm, the National Healthcare Enhancement Foundation (NHEF), which helped coordinate with international partners.

A representative of the foundation described the contribution as a demonstration of “true partnership where the Ministry tells us what they need and we engage with our international partners who then provide them.”

The support also forms part of broader assistance from Germany following the impact of Hurricane Melissa, with the German Embassy previously aiding affected schools and shelters.

“You and your team at the embassy went out and did some of the physical labour, working with the communities and making sure that the relationship between our countries is also experienced at a people-to-people level,” the Minister said.

He added that cooperation between both countries extends beyond health and disaster response into other technical areas of development.

Meanwhile, German Ambassador to Jamaica Jan Hendrik van Thiel said he was pleased to support the initiative on behalf of his country.

“I am standing here, very proud for the people of Germany, who want us to do this,” the Ambassador said.

KFC Jamaica, GenXs ramp up Carnival excitement with Machel Montano return

With just four Sundays remaining before revellers take over the streets of Kingston for Carnival Road March on April 12, KFC Jamaica is turning up the momentum as it returns as the exclusive quick service food partner for GenXs Infiniti Carnival.

The brand will once again bring its signature hot and spicy offerings to the road, while also helping to deliver one of the season’s major highlights — the return of soca superstar Machel Montano, the 2025 Trinidad Carnival Road March champion, who is set to join the GenXs road experience.

Fresh off his 2025 road march-winning hit “Encore,” Montano is expected to bring high energy to the festivities when he performs aboard the KFC music truck during the GenXs parade, adding to what organizers say will be an electrifying road experience.

The announcement was made during the band’s media launch held Saturday at Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel, where sponsors, partners and patrons gathered for an early preview of the season’s events leading up to road day.

For the fourth consecutive year, KFC will serve as GenXs’ meal partner, keeping revellers fuelled with its popular Hot Wings throughout the procession.

Speaking at the launch, KFC Jamaica Marketing Manager Andrei Roper highlighted the natural alignment between the brand and the local carnival scene.

“For us at KFC, it has been an incredible experience being part of the GenXs journey over the past four years. Carnival may not have started in Jamaica, but Jamaicans have shaped it into something uniquely our own, filled with creativity, culture and energy,” Roper said.

“What makes it special is that Carnival in Jamaica doesn’t try to be something it’s not. We’ve created our own distinct style of carnival here. In many ways that mirrors the story of KFC in Jamaica. While the brand has global roots, Jamaicans have embraced it and made it their own over the past five decades, and that shared connection with people and culture is what makes this partnership feel so natural.”

Roper added that the collaboration continues to expand alongside Jamaica’s growing carnival landscape.

“There is a genuine energy around the GenXs experience, and we see that same passion reflected in the love Jamaicans continue to show the KFC brand. This year we are especially excited about what lies ahead. From having the legend Machel Montano join the GenXs band on the road performing on our KFC music truck, to providing delicious finger-lickin’ KFC products across the carnival events and opportunities for patrons to win carnival event tickets and costume packages through our social media platforms, we’re looking forward to giving revellers even more reasons to enjoy the carnival season with KFC.”

The broader economic impact of Carnival in Jamaica was also underscored by Delano Seiveright, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, who pointed to the significant contribution the season makes across multiple sectors.

“Carnival in Jamaica has become a serious economic driver for the country. Direct expenditure alone amounted to approximately J$7.7 billion, or roughly US$50 million,” he said.

“But the impact goes far beyond those numbers. Hotels, villas, Airbnb operators, caterers, bus operators, car rental companies, DJs, videographers, photographers, makeup artists, costume designers and road vendors all benefit from the season. This ecosystem runs deep, from large enterprises to small and micro businesses, and we commend bands like GenXs and their partners for contributing to Jamaica’s continued economic activity.”

He added that the country’s ability to stage major events in the months following the impact of Hurricane Melissa highlights Jamaica’s resilience and the pace of recovery efforts.

Several major partners are supporting this year’s staging, including Smirnoff as title sponsor, alongside Pepsi Jamaica and Ocean Spray as beverage partners. Massy Distribution will also contribute to the experience with giveaways for revellers.

The launch event also featured a performance from Grenadian soca artist Muddy, who energized the audience with his hit single “Payroll.”

With the countdown to road day now underway, organizers say the collaboration between KFC and GenXs is set to once again add to the energy and scale of one of Jamaica’s most anticipated cultural celebrations.

Jamaican Rosie Gordon-Wallace spotlighted among Miami-Dade’s hospitality history makers

Rosie Gordon-Wallace

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is continuing its Women’s History Month recognition of influential Black- and woman-owned businesses by highlighting Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (DVCAI), founded by curator and Jamaican-born cultural leader Rosie Gordon-Wallace.

DVCAI has emerged as a global platform for diaspora artists, offering space to explore and challenge traditional interpretations of Caribbean and Latin American art. The incubator functions as both a local and international hub, supporting emerging artists from the Caribbean diaspora, artists of color and immigrant creatives through mentorship, experimentation and professional development.

Since its founding, DVCAI has supported more than 3,500 artists. Under Gordon-Wallace’s leadership, the organization has provided opportunities such as artist residencies, gallery exhibitions and cultural exchange programmes across more than a dozen Caribbean countries. Participating artists have engaged with creative communities in destinations including France, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Antigua, Suriname, Panama and Guadeloupe. This spring, DVCAI representatives are expected to travel to Belize with support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.

“My work with artists over these 30 years has been purposeful, strategic and meaningful,” said Gordon-Wallace. “DVCAI works with artists to promote, nurture and cultivate the vision and diverse talents of emerging artists in the community and beyond. This is our mission and purpose. We strive to be the most strategic and creative incubator network in a data and performance-driven world.”

Gordon-Wallace’s work also aligns with the GMCVB’s Art of Black Miami initiative, where she serves as a consultant. The year-round programme highlights a wide spectrum of visual arts across Miami’s heritage communities, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, animation, film and printmaking.

The initiative has become a key component of the bureau’s Tourism Business Enhancement efforts, linking the region’s creative sector with economic opportunities for local businesses. Through exhibitions and events, Art of Black Miami continues to drive visitor engagement and sustain economic activity beyond peak tourism periods.

In 2021, the programme expanded with the launch of the Art of Black Miami Podcast Series, featuring conversations with Miami-based artists on how the region’s diverse cultural landscape shapes their work.

A recognized curator, Gordon-Wallace has played a significant role in advancing contemporary Caribbean diaspora art. Her recent and ongoing curatorial projects include “What’s in Your Container?” at Barry University’s Monsignor William Barry Library, extended through April 30, as well as exhibitions such as “Across Ebb and Flow,” “The Whole World is Churning: Then and Now | Now and Beyond,” “The Depth of Identity 11” at Green Space Miami, “Brushes with Cancer” at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and “Order My Steps,” a solo exhibition by Roscoé B. Thické III at Oolite Arts in Miami Beach.

Beyond DVCAI, Gordon-Wallace is active in arts advocacy and development, supporting initiatives that expand funding and opportunities for artists. She is a member of the Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Fund for African-American Art and frequently serves as a panelist for organizations including the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the National YoungArts Foundation and the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs. She also serves on several boards, including the YoungArts Foundation Board, the National Performance Network, Art2Action, the Wattle and Red Earth Board and the Taha Thinks Culture Board of Directors.

Carole Ann Taylor spotlighted as a hospitality trailblazer in Miami-Dade

As part of its Women’s History Month observance, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is spotlighting standout Black- and woman-owned businesses shaping the region’s tourism sector, including Miami To Go, founded by veteran entrepreneur Carole Ann Taylor.

Taylor, president and co-owner of several travel retail and cultural businesses in Little Havana and at Miami International Airport, is being recognized as one of the county’s “Hospitality History Makers.” Her work has helped transform Miami’s retail tourism landscape, with five successful stores now operating at the airport and attracting visitors from around the globe.

She entered the travel retail and duty-free industry in 1987 with the launch of Bayside To Go at Bayside Marketplace. During her time there, Taylor played a key role in securing leased space for more than 25 Black-owned businesses and helped establish the Bayside Minority Foundation, aimed at supporting and financing minority entrepreneurs in Greater Miami.

Driven by the belief that visitors seek authentic cultural experiences, Taylor expanded her footprint with a portfolio of retail brands, including Miami To Go, Little Havana To Go, Miami Concepts, Miami Gifts To Go, Cultures To Go and Destination Concepts. Her influence also extended to the corporate sphere, where she served as a director of Perfumania Holdings, Inc., a company listed on NASDAQ.

Taylor’s impact on Miami-Dade’s tourism sector spans decades. She served on the GMCVB board for more than 30 years before stepping down in 2022 and was among the founders of the organization’s Visitor Industry Council, which promotes education, mentorship and scholarships for students pursuing careers in tourism. She also played a role in establishing the bureau’s Multicultural Tourism Development Department, focused on advancing tourism and business opportunities in historically significant communities.

These initiatives contributed to the development of key programs such as the Tourism Business Enhancement Program and Art of Black Miami, both of which have helped create platforms for minority-owned businesses, artists and entrepreneurs to grow and showcase their work.

“What’s most fulfilling is seeing our communities grow as visitor cultural attractions and the business opportunities that result from GMCVB programs,” said Taylor. “We have every reason to believe that those with creativity, courage and vision can succeed in Miami-Dade County’s hospitality and tourism industries when resources are made available.”

Beyond her business ventures, Taylor has served on several cultural and community boards, including the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the Historic Lyric Theater, WDNA 88.9 FM and Viernes Culturales.

In addition to her contributions to tourism and business development, Taylor is also a jazz vocalist, known for reimagining classic standards. Over the years, she has worked with legends such as Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton and currently holds a residency at The Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach.

The first 24 hours after an injury in Philadelphia matter more than you think

lawyer personal injury claim

An accident may occur at any place, at the city center, at the work place, or even in a grocery store. During the initial hours, the majority of the people pay attention to surviving the shock. However, what you do in the first 24 hours following an injury in Philadelphia can have a great influence on your physical health, your pocket, and your civil rights. As you deal with legal assistance, you may even see some unfamiliar words such as personal injury lawyer Philadelphia pa, but what you need to know the most is understanding of Pennsylvania law to your case at this point in time.

The early hours after an injury aren’t just about recovery. They’re about protecting your rights before insurance companies start building their defense.

Your Health Comes First Even If You Still Feel “Good”

Adrenaline can hide pain. As much as you may walk away from an accident believing that you’re okay, you may wake up the following day worse. Head injuries, internal, and soft tissue injuries don’t manifest themselves immediately. Other symptoms like dizziness, headaches, or stiffness don’t show right away. This is why one should not act as though he/she is okay just because he/she can stand or walk. This is because early medical care establishes an effective time line that can directly relate your injuries to the accident. It also gives the chance to the doctors to detect any concealed injuries before they deteriorate.

In the first day, you need to:

  • Seek medical assistance immediately
  • Take the advice of the doctor
  • Retain discharge documentation and instructions
  • Do not miss follow-up appointments

Medical records created right after the accident become powerful evidence. When you take too long before seeking care, insurance companies might claim that you didn’t have serious injuries or that they weren’t caused by the accident. Delays give insurers room to question your credibility. Timely treatment gives protection to both your health and your claim.

What You Say Can Affect Your Claim

In Philadelphia injury cases, statements matter. Insurance adjusters often reach out within hours. They may sound friendly and concerned, but their goal is to limit what they pay.

Be careful about these:

  • Giving recorded statements immediately
  • Guessing about what happened
  • Saying you’re “not hurt”
  • Accepting early settlement offers

You don’t have to provide a detailed statement right away. It’s okay to tell insurers you’re still seeking medical care. Words spoken too soon can be used later to question your injuries or shift blame onto you. Pennsylvania follows a modified comparative negligence rule. If it’s found more than 50% is your fault, you may not recover compensation. Even small statements can influence how fault is viewed.

Evidence Can Disappear Quickly

The immediate 24 hours are important in the maintenance of evidence.  Skid marks fade. Vehicles get repaired. Surveillance footage may be erased within days. Witnesses may forget details.

If possible, you must try to:

  • Take photos of the scene
  • Photograph injuries
  • Save contact information from witnesses
  • Write down what you remember

Even small details matter. The place of vehicles, weather conditions, and lighting may also influence the determination of fault. The more timely you write down what has occurred, the better your case can be. Delay is the last thing which makes it difficult to establish the true course of events.

Why Initial Legal Advisory Counseling Can Work

Most of the individuals believe they will only require a lawyer when their case is taken to court. Actually, legal advice is very beneficial mostly during the first day after an injury.

A skilled personal injury lawyer may assist you in knowing what to do or what to avoid. They are able to talk to insurance companies on your behalf and avoid making the frequent mistakes which minimize the claims. Early intervention also serves to make sure that the deadlines are met and evidence is preserved.

There is a statute of limitations on claims of injury in Pennsylvania, however waiting too long to act will destroy your case before the time limit comes. Early action does not imply taking a lawsuit immediately. It is taking the right choice in the very beginning.

Actions in the First Day May Bring Large Consequences

You’ll save months of frustration by making intelligent decisions early on.

The initial 24 hours following an injury are indeed more critical than most individuals would suggest in Philadelphia. The process of seeking medical attention, guarding your language, preservation of evidence and knowledge of your rights can both influence your claim. Also, the insurance companies start working as soon as an accident occurs.

Barbados to launch BB$5,000 Child Wealth Fund for every newborn

The Government of Barbados has announced plans to introduce a Barbados Republic Child Wealth Fund, a landmark initiative that will provide every eligible child with a BBD$5,000 investment at birth as part of efforts to reduce inequality and build long-term financial security.

The measure, unveiled in the country’s 2026–27 budget, will apply to every child born in Barbados on or after November 30, 2021. The funds will be held in trust and invested in a diversified portfolio, including real assets, bonds and equities, with access granted later in life for major expenses such as education or housing.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley has framed the initiative as a long-term empowerment tool rather than a short-term policy measure, aimed at ensuring that every Barbadian child begins life with a financial asset.

Minister of Finance Ryan Straughn, who presented the Budgetary Proposals and Financial Statement in the House of Assembly, said the programme is designed to break cycles where “too many families start from zero, generation after generation.”

“A universal birthright creates a baseline asset that cannot be taken away by bad luck or lack of opportunity,” Straughn said, describing the fund as a national standard in a republic “where every Bajan child deserves a chance to thrive.”

For the 2026–27 fiscal year, the government has allocated between $52.1 million and $52.2 million to cover children born since the eligibility date. The programme is expected to cost approximately $10 million to $12 million annually going forward, based on current birth rates.

Once legislation is passed later this year—ahead of the fifth anniversary of Barbados becoming a republic and the 60th anniversary of Independence—contributions to the fund will become statutory. An independent entity is expected to be appointed to manage the investments and oversee administration.

In addition to the child wealth fund, the government announced a Multiple Births Cash Grant to support families with twins or higher-order births. Effective April 1, families with twins will receive $300 monthly, while those with triplets or more will receive $600, with payments continuing until the children reach age five. The programme will be administered through the Social Empowerment Agency.

Officials say both initiatives reflect the government’s broader strategy to strengthen social protection systems while promoting economic inclusion and opportunity for future generations.

UNHCR and Japan partner with Belize to modernize asylum system

The Government of Belize, in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Government of Japan, has launched a major initiative to strengthen the country’s asylum system through innovative digital solutions, improved data management, and reinforced protection safeguards.

Funded with USD 667,000 from Japan, the project aims to modernize registration and case processing for asylum-seekers while ensuring confidentiality, accuracy, and compliance with international standards. A key component of the initiative is the rollout of a secure digital system to manage asylum cases, helping Belize prepare for increased demand while streamlining operations.

“By supporting the Government of Belize in strengthening national systems and fair, efficient asylum procedures, the Government of Japan and UNHCR are ensuring that people in need of international protection can access their rights safely and with dignity,” said H.E. Ryosuke Yamakura.

UNHCR’s Jose Egas emphasized that the initiative leverages legal frameworks, data-driven approaches, and digital solutions to guarantee timely and fair access to asylum for vulnerable populations.

Belize’s Hon. Kareem Musa highlighted that the partnership supports the modernization of the country’s institutional capacity, including secure case management, stronger data systems, and ongoing legal framework development. “These improvements enhance the ability of the Refugees Department to process applications responsibly while protecting confidential information,” he said, noting Belize’s long-standing collaboration with UNHCR since the 1980s.

The initiative reflects Belize’s commitment to uphold international protection standards, ensure fairness and efficiency in its asylum processes, and foster inclusive communities that welcome and integrate refugees while benefiting from their skills, labor, and cultural contributions.
