Trinidad declines to endorse CARICOM stance on regional security

Trinidad Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar

Trinidad and Tobago stood apart from its Caribbean Community (CARICOM) neighbours this weekend, declining to endorse a regional statement on key security and stability issues — including the growing presence of the United States military in the region — after leaders met to discuss a recent security build-up and a spate of deadly maritime strikes.

According to a CARICOM communique issued after the meeting, heads of government discussed the increased security activity in parts of the Caribbean and its potential impacts on member states. The communiqué said the meeting reaffirmed “the principle of maintaining the Caribbean Region as a Zone of Peace and the importance of dialogue and engagement towards the peaceful resolution of disputes and conflict,” but noted that Trinidad and Tobago “reserved its position.”

The meeting comes amid a series of lethal strikes by the Donald Trump administration on vessels it says were involved in drug trafficking off the Venezuelan coast. At least two people believed to be nationals of Trinidad and Tobago were reportedly killed in one of the strikes — a development that has intensified regional concern.

“Save in respect of Trinidad and Tobago which reserved its position, Heads agreed on the following: They reaffirmed the principle of maintaining the Caribbean Region as a Zone of Peace and the importance of dialogue and engagement towards the peaceful resolution of disputes and conflict. ‘CARICOM remains willing to assist towards that objective,’” the CARICOM statement read.

No official reason was immediately given for Trinidad and Tobago’s decision to withhold endorsement of the position. The stance has drawn criticism at home from the Opposition and others calling for clarity from the prime minister. In a brief statement on Saturday, Opposition MP Stuart Young — a former national security minister — urged Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to address citizens about the strikes and the uncertainty they have caused, accusing her of being “in hiding.”

Persad-Bissessar has not issued additional public comments about the deaths of the two Trinidadians beyond earlier remarks in which she publicly praised the U.S. anti-narcotics campaign. In a statement after a previous strike in early September, she said: “I, along with most of the country, am happy that the US naval deployment is having success in their mission,” and added, “The slaughter of our people is fuelled by evil cartel traffickers. The pain and suffering the cartels have inflicted on our nation is immense. I have no sympathy for traffickers; the US military should kill them all violently.” She also expressed support for U.S. forces, saying, “May God bless and protect the members of the US military who are engaged in the drug interdiction mission. Their efforts will save many lives in our country and the region.”

Regional leaders at the CARICOM meeting also reaffirmed their commitment to tackling narcotics trafficking and the illegal trade in small arms and light weapons, saying these threats to stability must be addressed through ongoing international cooperation and in keeping with international law. They emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means to resolve disputes.

The divergence between Trinidad and Tobago and other CARICOM members highlights growing tensions in the region as leaders balance concerns about sovereignty, regional security, and the human costs of drug trafficking and interdiction efforts. For now, CARICOM says it remains willing to assist in pursuing peaceful, law-based solutions — even as questions linger about the recent U.S. strikes and their toll on Caribbean nationals.

Delta Effex products that every D8 lover will adore

Whether you want to kick back after a long and tiring day or relieve yourself from some pain, Delta 8 products are the way to go. Unlike Delta 9, which has very high concentrations of THC, Delta 8 products have almost half of the potency of Delta 9. As such, the effects of Delta 8 products are chilled and mellow. The ‘high’ is not as strong, and the effects wear off after a reasonable time.

Regardless of your intended use of Delta 8 products, quality is mandatory. You have to enjoy the product knowing its effects will not cause you some side effects.

What To Look for When Getting Delta 8 Products

Before buying any Delta 8 products, you must research to identify the best products to suit your needs. The first factor you should consider is the source of the hemp where the Delta 8 is derived. Companies that indicate the source of the hemp show that their products are of high quality, and you can depend on them. They also show that their products are organic and natural.

Secondly, look for evidence that the products have undergone testing from a third party to ascertain their quality. Showing that the product has been lab-tested indicates that the product is safe for use and meets quality assurance standards.

Lastly, look for reviews online. Just as is the case with any other goods, when users have had a good experience with a product, they are likely to recommend it to others. The same goes for disappointing and substandard products. Make sure you have read the product reviews before going for any brand.

Of the numerous companies manufacturing Delta 8 products, Delta Effex products are the best since they have high testing and quality assurance levels of organic hemp.

Guyana leader defends Global Super League, rebukes India’s closed-door policy

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — President Dr Irfaan Ali has launched a fierce critique of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), condemning its long-standing policy that bars Indian players from participating in overseas Twenty20 leagues — a restriction that also impacts Guyana’s newly launched Global Super League (GSL).

Calling the move “unsustainable,” Dr Ali said India’s cricket board had leveraged its dominance to impose an exclusionary system that threatens the game’s global future. “India holds the cricketing nuclear button,” he declared. “Control through exclusion and market dominance may yield short-term gains, but an open, level playing field is the only sustainable model for long-term growth.”

“A disservice to Indian talent”

While the Indian Premier League (IPL) remains the world’s most lucrative T20 competition, the BCCI’s ban prevents active Indian players from joining any rival leagues — including the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Big Bash League (BBL), and the UAE’s ILT20.

Dr Ali argued that this isolationism is ultimately self-defeating. “India cannot be developing the level of talent it is developing just for its borders,” he said pointedly. “It’s like boxing — you can’t be a world champion if you only want to fight in your borders. The BCCI is doing an enormous disservice to the magnitude of talent that India has by not allowing participation in this league.”

Warning of a changing global landscape

Dr Ali cautioned that India’s approach could backfire as emerging powers enter the sporting arena. “Nations like Saudi Arabia are investing strategically in sports,” he noted. “That can quickly reshape the balance of power.”

He urged the BCCI to return to a more cooperative spirit, emphasizing that global cricket’s vitality depends on shared growth rather than monopolistic control.

The Global Super League: A vision of partnership

Positioned as a unifying venture, the Guyana-based Global Super League — backed by Cricket West Indies — aims to bring together the champions of major T20 competitions like the CPL, PSL, and BBL in a champions-league format.

Dr Ali stressed that the GSL is designed to complement, not compete with, existing leagues. “On the economic side, we strongly believe that the product we have launched — the Global Super League — is not meant to be in competition with any product. It is meant to be in partnership with all the different T20 products,” he explained.

He added with conviction, “In the first year, I believe it has ruffled enough feathers and created enough news for people to understand this is a serious league.”

Dr Ali’s remarks resonated beyond Guyana’s borders — a clarion call for reform in a sport increasingly shaped by power and money. His message was clear: cricket’s survival as a truly global game depends on openness, collaboration, and respect for shared growth.

UAE seal final spot as all 20 teams confirmed for 2026 T20 World Cup

West Indies

AL AMERAT, Oman — The United Arab Emirates have clinched the final berth for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, cruising past Japan by eight wickets in the Asia-East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier on Thursday.

A spirited bowling display led by Haider Ali’s 3 for 20, coupled with a fluent 70-run opening stand between Alishan Sharafu and captain Muhammad Waseem, ensured the UAE’s straightforward chase of Japan’s modest 117. Their victory not only capped off a dominant qualifying campaign but also confirmed the final line-up for next year’s expanded 20-team global event in India and Sri Lanka.

The UAE join Nepal and Oman as the last trio to secure their passage to the world stage.

The full roster: 20 nations ready for battle

The 2026 tournament will feature a truly global mix of contenders — from established heavyweights to history-making debutants.

Automatic qualifiers include co-hosts India and Sri Lanka, along with the top seven finishers from the 2024 T20 World Cup: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, the United States of America, and the West Indies.

Joining them on the basis of T20I rankings are New Zealand, Pakistan, and Ireland.

The regional qualifiers filled the remaining slots:

  • Americas: Canada secured the lone place in commanding fashion.
  • Europe: Italy, in a landmark achievement, reached their first-ever T20 World Cup alongside the Netherlands.
  • Africa: Namibia and Zimbabwe claimed the two available spots.
  • Asia-EAP: Nepal, Oman, and the UAE completed the global line-up.

The road ahead: Familiar format, fierce competition

The 2026 edition will mirror the structure of the previous tournament, maintaining the 20-team configuration. The field will be divided into four groups of five, with each team playing every other side in their group once.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage — a second round-robin phase consisting of two groups of four. From there, the top two sides in each Super Eight group will progress to the semi-finals, with the winners meeting in the grand final.

The format promises both consistency and spectacle, giving established powers little margin for error and providing emerging nations a genuine chance to make history.

A tournament of global reach and rising ambitions

As the final qualification pieces fall into place, anticipation builds for what promises to be one of the most diverse and competitive editions of the T20 World Cup yet. With newcomers like Italy entering cricket’s grandest stage and seasoned forces like India, Australia, and West Indies eyeing another title run, the 2026 tournament stands poised to deliver drama across continents.

Rishad Hossain’s six-for spins Bangladesh to 74-run triumph over West Indies

Rishad Hossain

MIRPUR, Bangladesh — On a surface built for spinners but not for the faint of heart, Rishad Hossain delivered a spell that will echo through Bangladesh’s cricketing chronicles.

The leg-spinner’s mesmerizing 6 for 35 demolished the West Indies’ chase and secured a 74-run victory for the hosts in the opening One-Day International at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium Saturday.

It was a defining night for the 21-year-old, who not only recorded his first five-wicket haul in ODIs but also single-handedly turned what seemed a comfortable pursuit into a dramatic collapse. The visitors, chasing 208, folded meekly for 133 in 39 overs, undone by Hossain’s guile and unrelenting precision.

West Indies start brightly before the storm

The West Indies had looked well-poised early on. Openers Brandon King and Alick Athanaze navigated the initial overs with confidence after consecutive maidens from Taskin Ahmed and Tanvir Islam.

King broke free with a four and a six off Taskin, while Athanaze countered Islam with three boundaries and a towering six over long-on, propelling the Windies to 28 without loss after four overs. Their aggression appeared to set the tone for a routine chase.

Athanaze reached 27 and brought up the team’s fifty in the 12th over — but that milestone marked the calm before the storm.

The leg-spinner’s web: A collapse nfolds

Player of the Match Hossain struck with his very first victim, trapping Athanaze lbw to open the floodgates. He then removed Keacy Carty for 11, caught at slip, as the Windies slipped from comfort into chaos.

King, the last bastion of resistance, fell to a ball of pure deception — a leg-break that drifted, gripped, and feathered the edge on its way to the wicketkeeper. His departure for 44 at 82 for three began the unraveling.

Three balls later, Sherfane Rutherford was gone without scoring, attempting a rash cut too close to his body. Then came Roston Chase, edging behind for six to hand Hossain his maiden five-wicket haul and Bangladesh full control at 92 for five.

From there, the West Indies never recovered. Captain Shai Hope’s dismissal for 15 off Tanvir Islam confirmed the inevitable, before Mustafizur Rahman (2 for 16) swept up the tail. Fittingly, it was Hossain who closed proceedings — having Jayden Seales caught at slip to seal a landmark win.

Bangladesh overcome rocky start

Earlier, Hope had chosen to bowl first after winning the toss — a decision that soon looked questionable. The visitors struck early through Romario Shepherd, who trapped Saif Hassan lbw, and Seales, who had Soumya Sarkar caught at backward point, leaving Bangladesh reeling at 8 for 2.

But Towhid Hridoy steadied the innings with a composed 51, partnering Najmul Hossain Shanto (32) in a crucial 71-run stand for the third wicket. Later, Mahidul Islam Ankon (46) and a late burst of 26 off 13 balls from Hossain himself lifted Bangladesh to a competitive 207 all out in 49.4 overs.

For the West Indies, Seales (3 for 48) was the pick of the bowlers, supported by Chase (2 for 30) and Justin Greaves (2 for 32).

Bangladesh draw first blood

With the emphatic victory, Bangladesh take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The West Indies, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a squandered start and their inability to negotiate quality spin under pressure.

The teams will reconvene at the same venue on Tuesday for the second encounter — one that the visitors must win to stay alive in the series.

Azim Bassarath set for sixth straight term as TTCB President

Azim Bassarath CWI
Azim Bassarath

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Azim Bassarath is poised to extend his remarkable reign over Trinidad and Tobago cricket, set to be re-elected president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) for a record sixth consecutive term.

The long-serving cricket administrator, who also serves as vice-president of Cricket West Indies (CWI), will be returned unopposed when the TTCB stages its national executive elections on October 25.

Bassarath’s uncontested nomination reaffirms his commanding position within the sport’s local hierarchy — one he has held since 2009, when he first unseated former West Indies wicketkeeper Deryck Murray.

Continuity at the helm

With more than 15 years of stewardship, Bassarath’s leadership has been synonymous with organizational stability and administrative continuity in Trinidad and Tobago cricket. His re-election ensures that the TTCB’s current agenda — focusing on development pathways, governance, and competitive balance — will continue largely uninterrupted.

Also running unopposed are Altaf Baksh, nominated for first vice-president, and attorney-at-law Henry Chase, who will return as general secretary.

Contested seats: New challenges, familiar faces

While the presidency remains uncontested, several other executive positions have sparked competitive races.

Kerwin John, head of the Tobago Cricket Association, faces a challenge from former national cricketer Rajendra Mangalie for the post of second vice-president.
Meanwhile, incumbent third vice-president Parasram Singh will square off against Avinash Suruj, and treasurer Stephen Ramkissoon faces competition from Richard Ramkissoon in what promises to be a tightly watched contest.

Executive council: Six candidates, five seats

The ballot for executive member positions has drawn six nominees, from which five will be elected to serve on the board. The contenders are:

  • Ann Browne-John
  • Mitra Ragoonanan
  • Frank Simmons
  • Ravi Teeluck
  • Dr Anand Rampersad
  • Sharaz Mohammed

Those elected will join the new administration for a four-year term, contributing to the ongoing management and strategic direction of Trinidad and Tobago cricket.

A legacy cemented

Bassarath’s anticipated sixth term underscores both his enduring influence and the confidence placed in his leadership by the cricketing community. Under his tenure, the TTCB has navigated challenges in governance, player development, and financial sustainability — and his continued presence promises stability as regional cricket charts its next chapter.

The meaning behind popular tattoo symbols and styles

Tattoos have been a form of self-expression for centuries, with various symbols and styles holding deep meaning for those who wear them. From ancient tribal designs to modern minimalist lines, tattoos have evolved into a diverse art form that continues to captivate people around the world. In this article, we’ll explore some of the most popular tattoo symbols and styles, and the meanings behind them.

The Timeless Appeal of Traditional Tattoos

Traditional tattoos, also known as “old school” or “American traditional,” have a distinct style characterized by bold lines, bright colors, and iconic imagery. These designs often feature classic symbols like anchors, roses, and skulls, each with their own symbolic meaning. Anchors, for example, represent stability and a strong foundation, while roses often symbolize love, beauty, and passion.

The Spiritual Significance of Tribal Tattoos

Tribal tattoos have been a part of many cultures for thousands of years, with designs varying greatly depending on the specific tribe or region. These tattoos often hold deep spiritual significance, representing a person’s connection to their ancestors, their community, and the natural world. Tribal tattoos are often characterized by intricate patterns, geometric shapes, and organic lines that flow with the contours of the body.

The Minimalist Beauty of Line Tattoos

In recent years, minimalist line tattoos have gained popularity for their simple yet striking appearance. These tattoos often feature delicate, continuous lines that create a sense of elegance and sophistication. Popular designs include outlines of animals, plants, and abstract shapes, each with their own symbolic meaning. Line tattoos are a great choice for those who want a subtle yet meaningful tattoo that can be easily concealed if necessary.

The Symbolic Power of Animal Tattoos

Animal tattoos are another popular choice, with each creature representing different qualities and characteristics. Lions, for example, are often associated with courage, strength, and leadership, while birds can symbolize freedom, independence, and the ability to rise above life’s challenges. Other popular animal tattoos include wolves, elephants, and butterflies, each with their own unique meaning.

The Transformative Journey of Cover-Up Tattoos

Sometimes, people may have a tattoo that no longer resonates with them or that they regret getting in the first place. In these cases, a skilled tattoo artist can create a cover-up tattoo that transforms the old design into something new and meaningful. This process can be a powerful way to reclaim one’s body and move forward from the past. However, in some cases, a cover-up may not be possible, and tattoo removal may be the best option. If you’re considering tattoo removal, it’s important to seek out a reputable and experienced provider, such as an expert tattoo removal Ottawa, ON service.

The Endless Possibilities of Custom Tattoos

While many people choose tattoos based on existing designs or symbols, others opt for custom tattoos that are entirely unique to them. Custom tattoos allow individuals to work closely with a tattoo artist to create a design that holds personal meaning and reflects their individual style and personality. Whether it’s a tribute to a loved one, a meaningful quote, or an abstract design, custom tattoos are a powerful form of self-expression.

Embracing the Art of Tattoos

No matter what style or symbol you choose, tattoos are a deeply personal form of art that allow individuals to express themselves and carry meaningful stories with them wherever they go. By understanding the symbolism and significance behind different tattoo designs, we can gain a greater appreciation for this ancient and enduring art form. Whether you’re considering your first tattoo or adding to an existing collection, remember to choose a design that resonates with you and holds personal significance.

When it comes to online betting, keeping your money protected should always be the top priority. With so many bookmakers competing for your attention, it’s easy to see why many players ask the same question: what’s the safest way to deposit with online bookmakers?

So whether you’re trying out sites like https://tribuna.com/en/betting/betting-sites/new-betting-sites/ or staying loyal to the best betting sites of 2026, it’s important to understand how different deposit methods work — and which ones offer the strongest protection for your funds.

Why Safe Deposits Matter

When you bet online, you’re trusting a website with sensitive information — your name, your card details, maybe even your bank account – which can feel a little nerve-wracking. With safe payment systems, you’ll often get faster withdrawals, lower transaction fees, and more control over your betting activity. It’s peace of mind that lets you focus on what really matters: enjoying the game.

Key features of secure deposit methods

When evaluating deposit methods for online bookmakers, look for these essential features:

Key West woman faces new charges in fake Cuba travel scheme

key west scheme

A Key West woman accused of posing as a travel agent and scamming customers with fake trips to Cuba is facing new charges, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Traci Leann Culiver-Sanchez, 60, was arrested again this week and charged with additional counts of theft as investigators continue to uncover more alleged victims.

Culiver-Sanchez and her husband, Steven Carl Sanchez, 54, were previously arrested earlier this year on charges of grand theft and selling travel services without registration to a terrorist state.

Authorities said the couple operated Majestic Seas Charters and Majestic Seas Luxury Charters, advertising trips to Cuba that were ultimately cancelled — with no refunds issued.

In one case, victims reportedly paid $4,000 each for a December 2024 trip to Cuba, only to have the plans fall apart after the couple showed up late to Miami International Airport, causing the group to miss their flight. Even after rebooking, the trip was later cancelled, and the travelers never got their money back.

As the investigation continued, more victims came forward, claiming they had also booked fishing charter trips through the company that were cancelled without refunds.

Culiver-Sanchez was booked into the Monroe County Jail on Wednesday. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing.

Police investigate death of infant in Fort Lauderdale; dog removed from home

Fort Lauderdale Police

Detectives spent several hours at a Fort Lauderdale home on Friday investigating the death of an infant, after officers responded to a medical call along the 1500 block of Northwest 15th Terrace.

Police arrived around midday, taping off the residence as they conducted their investigation. A heavy police presence remained in the neighborhood for much of the afternoon.

“I came outside to throw the trash out. I saw about 30 police cars — caught me off guard, caught everybody off guard. The whole neighborhood,” one resident told 7News.

Neighbors said detectives canvassed the area, asking if anyone had seen or knew the people living in the home.

“The police say this morning, the baby was born this morning and now the baby [is] dead. They don’t know how the baby died,” another resident said. “He came around asking, ‘Have we ever seen these people?’ … But these people never come outside. Windows closed, they don’t ever come outside.”

Residents told reporters they were unaware anyone in the home was pregnant and expressed shock and sadness over the tragedy. “I’m just sad about the baby. My heart go out for the baby though,” said one neighbor.

Police confirmed that Broward County Animal Control removed a dog from the home as part of the ongoing investigation.

As of Friday evening, Fort Lauderdale Police said it remains unclear whether foul play was involved, and the cause of the infant’s death has not yet been released.

British Virgin Islands showcases crypto and digital finance expertise at TOKEN2049 Singapore

British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is positioning itself as a leading hub for crypto and digital finance, even as international pressures challenge its status as a competitive offshore financial centre.

Earlier this month, BVI Finance participated in TOKEN2049 Singapore, one of Asia’s premier Web3 and blockchain events, showcasing the territory’s offerings in digital innovation, fintech regulation, and global financial services. Through panel discussions and networking sessions with influential fintech leaders, the BVI delegation emphasized that the jurisdiction remains open for business, combining strong regulation with business-friendly structures and expertise in cross-border digital asset solutions.

According to BVI Finance, participation in TOKEN2049 highlighted the territory’s ability to provide fintech firms with clarity, stability, and international market access. The move aligns with the findings of its global report, Destination Digital, which showed that 94 percent of fintech leaders consider cross-border expansion vital, with many seeking jurisdictions like the BVI for their balanced regulatory approach.

The report also pointed to the appeal of credible legal frameworks, such as the Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, which allow for innovation while ensuring responsible oversight.

BVI Finance said that events like TOKEN2049 strengthen the territory’s reputation as a forward-thinking, stable jurisdiction committed to world-class regulation while embracing digital transformation. The Singapore appearance is part of a broader global outreach campaign aimed at modernising the BVI’s financial services and protecting its standing amid international reforms on tax transparency and beneficial ownership.

The participation reinforces the BVI’s ongoing goal to remain a trusted destination for fintech companies seeking a combination of innovation, regulatory clarity, and access to global markets.

Jamaica’s inflation edges up to 2.1% in September

Jamaica sees positive trends in inflation and unemployment rate

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) has reported that the point-to-point domestic inflation rate for September rose to 2.1 per cent, up from a record low of 1.2 per cent in August. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) also increased by 0.8 per cent for the month.

Speaking at STATIN’s Quarterly Press Briefing at S Hotel in Kingston, Acting Director of Administrative Statistics Siomara McDonald identified the main contributors to the inflation uptick as the ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ division, which rose by 4.8 per cent, and the ‘Restaurants and Accommodation Services’ division, which increased by 4.1 per cent.

“However, this continued slowdown in the inflation rate is a result of low increases in two of the heavier-weighted divisions,” McDonald noted. She highlighted that ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ rose by just 0.7 per cent — markedly lower than last year’s six per cent increase — while ‘Transport’ moved up only 0.3 per cent compared to a 9.1 per cent spike in September 2024.

The CPI’s 0.8 per cent increase reflects changes in the general price level of goods and services typically purchased by Jamaican households. The main contributors were ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’, which rose by 0.9 per cent (primarily due to a one per cent increase in food prices), and ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels’, which increased by one per cent, largely due to higher electricity rates.

Additionally, the Education division recorded a 5.6 per cent increase, reflecting adjustments in tuition fees and back-to-school expenses.

McDonald emphasized that these movements underscore the ongoing influence of utility-related costs, service sector price adjustments, and seasonal factors affecting food and education, while also noting that inflation remains relatively low compared with historical averages.

UN Security Council renews Haiti sanctions, targets gang leaders and traffickers

Security Council renews UN's political mission in Haiti

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously renewed the sanctions regime on Haiti for one year, adopting Resolution 2794 (2025). The measures include a travel ban, asset freeze, and arms embargo targeting individuals and entities involved in destabilizing activities, including the illicit exploitation or trade of natural resources.

The resolution also extends the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the Council Committee on Haiti for 13 months and specifically adds Dimitri Herard and Kempes Sanon to the sanctions list. According to the U.S. representative, Herard “has played a key role in enabling the activities of criminal networks and gangs in Haiti,” while Sanon “has played a significant role in consolidating gang power in Port-au-Prince.”

The Council stressed that Member States must prevent illicit trafficking of arms and related material, strengthen border controls, and support Haitian authorities in managing weapons and ammunition. Representatives emphasized the sanctions as part of a broader effort to promote peace and stability, while calling for cooperation among national, regional, and international actors.

Several members, including France, Denmark, Slovenia, Greece, and the UK, expressed regret that the resolution did not explicitly reference sexual and gender-based violence, which disproportionately affects women and girls in Haiti. They urged that future renewals address these human rights concerns.

China’s representative called for more detailed and verifiable measures to ensure effective regulation of weapons and ammunition, while Pakistan highlighted that sanctions should be judiciously applied, targeting delinquent individuals without harming the general populace. Russia stressed that sanctions should not fundamentally alter Haiti’s political landscape.

Haiti’s representative welcomed the renewed regime, describing it as a deterrent mechanism against armed gangs and their enablers. He also noted that the sanctions complement the Gang Suppression Force, which took over from the Multinational Security Support mission under UNSC Resolution 2793 (2025), and confirmed that cases of listed individuals will be handled according to national law.

The resolution underscores the UNSC’s ongoing commitment to combating gang violence, curbing arms trafficking, and supporting Haitian sovereignty and stability amid persistent security challenges.

Dominica police make country’s largest cocaine bust in history

The Dominica police have announced the biggest drug seizure in the country’s history, confiscating 1,730 kilos of cocaine with a street value of over EC$46 million (US$17 million) as part of Operation Clean Street.

Acting Police Commissioner Lincoln Corbette said at a news conference on Friday that the haul surpasses previous major seizures, recalling that in the early 1980s the largest confiscations were around 3,000 pounds. “We have dwarfed that. That is 46 million dollars that will not be in the hands of criminals to cause damage and danger to our citizens,” Corbette said.

The operation has also led to the arrest of 24 individuals — 19 men and five women — charged with various offences. In addition, authorities confiscated large amounts of cash and numerous firearms, including two shotguns, a sub-machine gun, a nine-millimeter Taurus pistol, seven air rifles, and two Glock pistols, along with several rounds of ammunition. Cash seized included over US$10,000, 800 Barbados dollars, 400 Euros, and EC$30,507.

“This seizure represents a major blow to organized crime in Dominica,” Corbette said, highlighting the dangerous impact of cocaine on the nation’s citizens and the commitment of law enforcement to curb its circulation.

The announcement underscores the ongoing efforts by Dominica police to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region and to prevent the spread of narcotics that threaten public safety.

Venezuelan Ambassador urges Caribbean unity amid US military build-up

Venezuelan Ambassador to Dominica, Jose Durabio Moros Savelli
Venezuelan Ambassador to Dominica, Jose Durabio Moros Savelli

The Venezuelan Ambassador to Dominica, Jose Durabio Moros Savelli, is calling on Caribbean nations to stand united against the U.S. military presence in waters off Venezuela, warning that escalating tensions threaten peace across the region.

Washington has intensified deployments in the southern Caribbean, citing alleged involvement of Caracas in the illegal narcotics trade. On Thursday, the U.S. military seized survivors from a strike on a suspected drug-carrying vessel — believed to be at least the sixth strike since August and the first to result in survivors taken into custody. Details on the individuals’ fate remain unclear.

Savelli stressed that the threat extends beyond Venezuela. “We should fully preserve the peace in the region … it is not just about Venezuela … if the United States start a war in the Caribbean it will be bad for all of us, our economy, our people,” he said. He also raised concerns about the deployment of nuclear-capable submarines, noting that such measures could endanger the entire Caribbean.

The diplomat urged Caribbean nations, which uphold international law and respect for fundamental principles, to act collectively to prevent conflict. He also called on the international community and social media users to amplify calls for peace, saying, “We need to fill social media with requirements for peace in the Caribbean.”

The U.S. military presence in the region has been expanded under the Trump administration, which last month dispatched an amphibious squadron to the southern Caribbean, supported by a nuclear-powered attack submarine, P8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft, several destroyers, and a guided-missile cruiser. The strikes to date have reportedly killed at least 28 people.

Savelli’s remarks come amid growing anxiety in the Caribbean over the potential for escalation, underscoring calls for diplomatic engagement to maintain regional stability.

Haiti mourns legendary Sound Engineer Robert ‘Bobby’ Denis

Robert Denis

Haiti and the wider Caribbean music and media communities are mourning the loss of Robert Denis, known affectionately as “Bobby,” who passed away at the age of 78 following a stroke. Denis was a pioneering sound engineer and a central figure in Haitian music from the 1970s through 2000.

Founder of the iconic Audiotek studio, Denis played a crucial role in modernizing Haitian sound, shaping the musical identity of generations of artists and groups. His technical expertise and artistic sensitivity helped elevate Haitian music to a universal cultural heritage. Renowned for his work with artists such as Ansy Derose, Coupe Cloué, Isnard Douby, Fred Paul, and Raymond Cajuste, Audiotek was more than a studio — it was a hub of creativity, exchange, and fraternity.

Beyond his musical contributions, Denis was a champion of Haitian media, serving as president of the National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH) and leading Radio Télé Canal Bleu. He dedicated his life to defending press freedom, promoting the professional development of media practitioners, and strengthening the national media landscape.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, on behalf of the government, expressed deep sadness at Denis’s passing, praising him as a “generous, caring man deeply attached to his country’s culture and media.” The Presidential Transitional Council also extended condolences, highlighting Denis’s role as a visionary leader in both the media and cultural sectors.

“His passing leaves a huge void, but his legacy lives on in every song, every arrangement, every note that bears the mark of his expertise and passion,” the government statement read.

Robert Denis’s life and work leave an enduring imprint on Haitian music and media, serving as a lasting inspiration for future generations.

Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ surpasses 2 billion streams on Spotify

Rihanna Umbrella

Nearly two decades after it first dominated global airwaves, Rihanna’s single “Umbrella” has officially surpassed 2 billion streams on Spotify, adding yet another milestone to the Barbadian superstar’s career. Originally released on March 29, 2007, “Umbrella” featured rap mogul Jay-Z and served as the lead single from Rihanna’s third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad.

The track, which catapulted Rihanna into global superstardom, marked a turning point not just in her career but in pop music itself. With its thunderous beat, emotionally-charged chorus, and genre-blending production, “Umbrella” became a cultural phenomenon, topping the charts in 19 countries, including a record-breaking 10-week run at No. 1 in the UK, the longest of the 2000s.

In the United States, it spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying its status as one of the most defining songs of its era. Remarkably, the song found new life in 2023 when it re-entered the Hot 100 at No. 37 following Rihanna’s headline-making performance at the Super Bowl LVII halftime show.

This latest streaming milestone also makes “Umbrella” Jay-Z’s first and Rihanna’s third song to cross the 2-billion mark on Spotify, following fan-favorites “We Found Love” and “Love on the Brain.”

“Umbrella” left an indelible mark on pop culture. It won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards and was nominated for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Its music video also earned Video of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has since certified the single Diamond, reflecting over 10 million units sold in the U.S. alone. In 2021, Rolling Stone placed it at No. 332 on its authoritative list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

With this achievement, Rihanna continues to cement her status as one of the most successful Caribbean artists in history. Hailing from Saint Michael, Barbados, the singer, actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has built a global empire that extends far beyond music. Yet her roots remain at the core of her identity, and she’s frequently praised for putting Caribbean culture on the world stage.

Since “Umbrella”, Rihanna has released multiple chart-topping albums and countless singles, many of which have become anthems across genres. Her musical achievements are matched only by her impact in fashion and beauty, most notably with her billion-dollar brand, Fenty Beauty.

While her fans continue to eagerly await news of her next studio album, Rihanna has been making headlines in other ways. Just this September, she gave birth to her third child and first daughter, Rocky Irish Mayers, with longtime partner ASAP Rocky.

Even as she embraces motherhood and entrepreneurial success, Rihanna’s influence in music shows no signs of waning. The 2-billion stream milestone is a testament to her staying power, her talent, and the global love for a song that, 18 years on, still feels as fresh and resonant as ever.

CARICOM reaffirms ‘zone of peace’ as US strikes raise regional alarm

CARICOM Caribbean general elections

Amid escalating regional tensions following a series of deadly U.S. military strikes in Caribbean waters, Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.

The statement came after the U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday issued an unusual warning urging Americans to avoid U.S. government facilities in the country. The alert followed reports that two Trinidadian fishermen are believed to have been killed in a recent U.S. strike, which Washington said targeted suspected drug traffickers near Venezuelan waters.

During their discussions, CARICOM leaders addressed the increased security build-up across the region and its potential implications for Member States. “Save in respect of Trinidad and Tobago who reserved its position,” the statement read, the Heads of Government agreed on several key points aimed at preserving peace and stability.

They reaffirmed the principle of maintaining the Caribbean Region as a Zone of Peace and underscored “the importance of dialogue and engagement towards the peaceful resolution of disputes and conflict.” The Community also reiterated its willingness to assist in efforts to defuse tensions.

CARICOM Heads further emphasized their commitment to fighting narcotrafficking and the illegal trade in small arms and light weapons, noting that such challenges should be addressed through international cooperation and in accordance with international law.

The leaders closed ranks in expressing unequivocal support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the Region, and for “the safety and livelihoods of the people of the Caribbean.”

The statement follows remarks from Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, who confirmed that U.S. officials had recently briefed local authorities on “threats directed at American citizens in the Caribbean nation,” potentially linked to the ongoing situation with Venezuela. Alexander said that security measures have been implemented to address any arising threats but declined to provide further details.

Since early September, six U.S. strikes have killed at least 28 people, according to reports, intensifying concerns about the widening reach of U.S. military operations in Caribbean waters.

Jamaican Dr. Rushell White appointed Interim Acting Superintendent in NYC School System

Rushell White

Jamaica-born educator Dr. Rushell White has been promoted to interim acting superintendent in the New York City (NYC) school system.

In NYC, an individual is first appointed as interim acting superintendent before being confirmed as a full superintendent, a process that typically lasts around six months.

Dr. White, who previously served as deputy superintendent in the city’s education department, will now oversee 47 schools in northern Brooklyn, serving approximately 27,000 students. In her new role, she will also supervise about 6,000 deputy superintendents, principals, assistant principals, teachers, and other education professionals in the district.

Her journey began in Yallahs, St. Thomas, where she was born. She attended Yallahs Primary School before migrating to the United States at age 8, settling in Bushwick, Brooklyn, at a time when the neighborhood was considered one of the city’s more challenging areas.

White attended Elementary School 377, where she was accepted into the gifted programme, then continued to IS 383 for the Gifted and Talented in 1985, and John Dewey High School in Brooklyn in 1990. She went on to earn her bachelor’s, master’s, and Advanced Certificate in Supervision and Administration from Brooklyn College, completing her studies over nine years. In December 2018, she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership at Russell Sage College in Albany, New York, where she published her dissertation titled “Psychological Safety and English-Speaking Caribbean Students in New York City Public Schools.”

With 27 years in education, Dr. White began her career as an English teacher before moving on to roles as dean, assistant principal, and principal of MS 226, where she served for nine years. She has been credited with turning around several struggling schools and is regarded as one of NYC’s most accomplished educational leaders.

“Over 27 years, I served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of continuous improvement, and deputy superintendent of Brooklyn North high schools. Each step has prepared me to lead with both head and heart to build on the momentum of progress, innovation, and equity for our extraordinary students, families, and communities,” she said.

White said her leadership approach is shaped by her doctoral research, which examined the benefits of creating psychologically safe school environments for immigrant students in NYC public schools — a passion influenced by her own immigrant experience. “Every child deserves to feel seen, safe, and supported as they unlock their full potential,” she said.

In an email announcing her appointment, Dr. White shared her vision for the 2025–2026 school year, saying she looks forward to “advancing our shared goals in amplifying student voice, strengthening partnerships with parents and communities, and expanding college and career pathways so that every student has a strong plan toward economic security.”

“Together, we will deepen culturally responsive instruction, strengthen literacy and math outcomes through targeted interventions and professional development, and widen business partnerships that give students real-world learning opportunities,” she added.

US Embassy warns Americans to avoid government facilities in Trinidad and Tobago

U.S. Embassy in Trinidad

The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday issued an unusual warning urging Americans to stay away from U.S. government facilities in the twin-island nation, amid growing tensions between the United States and Venezuela following a series of deadly U.S. military strikes in Caribbean waters.

The alert comes as residents in one Trinidadian community mourn the disappearance of two local fishermen believed to have been killed in a U.S. strike on Tuesday. Venezuela, located just a few miles from Trinidad, has condemned the strikes, which Washington says targeted suspected drug traffickers.

According to Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, the alert was based on “threats directed at American citizens in the Caribbean nation,” which U.S. authorities indicated “could be linked” to ongoing regional tensions. Alexander told The Associated Press that local authorities have implemented security measures “to deal with any situations that may arise,” though he declined to share details about the reported threats.

Alexander added that U.S. officials discussed the tense situation during a recent briefing with Trinidad and Tobago authorities. Since early September, six U.S. strikes have killed at least 28 people, heightening concerns across the region.

Following the most recent attack, the U.S. government took survivors into custody after the military struck a suspected drug-carrying vessel in the Caribbean, officials said Friday. The Trump administration has maintained that it considers alleged drug traffickers as unlawful combatants who “must be met with military force.”

US sanctions former Haitian security chief, gang leader

The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday imposed sanctions on the former head of Haitian presidential security and a notorious gang leader, accusing both men of aiding a powerful criminal coalition that Washington earlier this year labeled a foreign terrorist organization.

The sanctions target Dimitri Herard, a former police officer who was imprisoned in connection with the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, and Kempes Sanon, leader of the Bel Air gang, one of several groups that make up the Viv Ansanm coalition.

According to the Treasury, Herard “colluded” with Viv Ansanm after escaping from prison in 2024, providing “training and firearms” to gang leaders and backing coordinated attacks against state institutions.

Sanon, the agency said, helped the coalition consolidate power in Haiti through “indiscriminate civilian killings, extortion, illicit taxation, and kidnappings.”

“Today’s action underscores the critical role of gang leaders and facilitators like Herard and Sanon, whose support enables Viv Ansanm’s campaign of violence, extortion, and terrorism in Haiti,” Bradley T. Smith, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, said in a statement.

The sanctions freeze all properties owned by the two men in the United States and prohibit any U.S.-based business transactions with them.

Gang violence has engulfed Haiti since Moïse’s assassination, leaving the government in disarray and much of the capital under gang control. Despite international efforts, the escalating conflict continues to destabilize the Caribbean nation.

A tribute beyond victory! Gambhir hails the spirit of the West Indies

West Indies

NEW DELHI, India — India may have sealed a convincing 2-0 series win over the West Indies, but the real story of the just-concluded Tests was not one of dominance—it was one of deep respect.

In an unexpected and stirring gesture, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, turned the spotlight on the visitors, hailing their courage, humility, and the enduring spirit of Caribbean cricket.

A gesture beyond victory

As the series wrapped up at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, West Indies coach Daren Sammy invited Gambhir to speak to his players. What followed was not the usual victor’s platitudes, but a heartfelt address that captured the attention of both teams.

Gambhir began by lauding the West Indians not for their statistics, but for their character. “It’s a great learning experience, the way you guys carry yourselves,” he said. “Your humility, your humbleness, is something my team—and a lot of teams across the globe—have to learn from.”

His words were met with quiet reflection, the kind that comes when respect transcends rivalry.

A battle that redefined defeat

Despite India’s series sweep, the West Indies’ fightback in the second Test had turned heads. Shai Hope and John Campbell each struck centuries, all-rounder Justin Greaves battled through to an unbeaten fifty, and tailender Jayden Seales, batting at No. 11, defied expectations with a gritty 32 that lasted over an hour.

Gambhir seized on that performance as a symbol of something greater. “Purpose is always more important than love,” he told them. “When I look at you guys, I feel you can inspire the next generation. The way you played in that second innings is probably the template that can take West Indies cricket forward.”

The power of the unsung

For Gambhir, greatness lies as much in small acts of defiance as in centuries and five-wicket hauls. He singled out Seales and Anderson Phillip for their unheralded resilience, calling their contributions “massive”—the kind of efforts, he said, that truly build a team’s foundation.

“The only opinions that should matter,” he reminded them, “are what people think in this dressing room.” It was a message of solidarity, urging belief from within rather than validation from outside voices.

Admiration in adversity

Acknowledging the heavier burdens West Indies players often carry—limited resources, travel challenges, and the vast expectations of a proud cricketing legacy—Gambhir commended their ability to persevere with grace.

“You guys keep doing it with a smile,” he said. “That’s something very few teams can manage.”

Then came the words that lingered long after his address ended—a line destined to echo far beyond the Delhi dressing room.

“West Indian cricket doesn’t need world cricket,” Gambhir declared. “World cricket needs West Indian cricket. Remember that.”

It was more than praise—it was an affirmation of legacy. From a rival coach to a team in transition, it was a reminder that while victories may come and go, spirit and identity endure.

Busby confirms Reggae Girlz squad, explains Shaw’s omission and injury woes

Reggae Girlz head coach Hubert Busby
Reggae Girlz head coach Hubert Busby

Head coach Hubert Busby Jr has named a seasoned 20-member Reggae Girlz squad for Jamaica’s upcoming international friendly against Trinidad and Tobago on October 28 in Port of Spain.

The line-up will be anchored by defensive stalwart Allyson Swaby and veteran goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer, while rising stars Jody Brown, Kayla McKenna, and Shania Hayles are expected to lead the attacking charge.

There’s also a fresh face in the mix — defender Tianna Harris of Portuguese club Damaiense, who earns her first senior call-up — along with Jaileah McPherson, captain of Jamaica’s U20 team, who continues her integration into the senior setup.

Key stars missing — and why

Several marquee players, including Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, Drew Spence, and Trudy Carter, will be absent for this match due to health and availability concerns.

Spence and Carter were both ruled out through injury. “Drew picked up a knock last week,” Busby explained. “Tottenham informed us they would be holding her out, and we hope she’ll be ready for the next round. Trudy was also in the squad, but she picked up a knock as well.”

The most notable omission, however, is that of Shaw, whose absence was a mutual decision involving Manchester City, the Jamaica Football Federation, and Shaw herself.

“Last week I was in Manchester and had a good conversation with Bunny and her group — her physio, our medical team — and we decided to keep her out of this round,” Busby shared. “The concern is the potential condition of the pitches and other factors we might face. Rather than risk it all in what is, after all, a friendly, we agreed it’s best she stays in Manchester, monitors her progress, and rejoins us for the Concacaf W Qualifiers.”

Busby noted that “some information remains private between Man City and ourselves,” but emphasized the decision was guided by long-term fitness priorities rather than immediate availability.

Collegiate contingent also unavailable

The team will also be without several players based in the United States collegiate system. After discussions with their universities, the federation agreed not to call them up given their ongoing seasons, upcoming tournaments, and academic demands.

“As far as the college players are concerned, they’re in the midst of their season and heading into tournament play,” Busby said. “We’ve taken into account their incredible scholastic workload as well.”

Building on familiar foundations

Despite the absences, Busby expressed full confidence in his “core group” — a collection of players who have been central to the team’s development over the past year.

“There’s a strong core of players who have been with this group for a while now,” he explained. “We’ve used opportunities like this to maintain that core whenever others aren’t available due to injury or personal reasons. It’s allowed us to keep building consistency within the program.”

He added that the recent expansion of the player pool has given Jamaica greater depth and flexibility, ensuring the team can still compete strongly even when key players are unavailable.

Eyes on the bigger picture

The friendly against Trinidad will serve as a vital tune-up for next month’s Concacaf W Qualifiers, where Jamaica has been drawn in Group B alongside Guyana, Nicaragua, Dominica, and Antigua and Barbuda.

While Shaw’s absence may draw headlines, Busby’s focus remains firmly on continuity, chemistry, and preparation. “This game is about reinforcing our identity,” he said. “The players we have are ready to step up, and this camp gives us another chance to strengthen the foundation that carries us forward.”

Full Squad: Goalkeepers – Rebecca Spencer, Sydney Schneider; Defenders – Allyson Swaby, Tianna Harris, Konya Plummer, Chantelle Swaby, Tiffany Cameron, Gabrielle Gayle; Midfielders – Sade Adamoluken, Jaileah McPherson, Deniesha Blackwood, Izzy Groves, Atlanta Primus, Vyan Sampson; Forwards – Kayla McKenna, Natasha Thomas, Shania Hayles, Jody Brown, Njeri Butts, Kiki Van Zanten.
