The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has officially approved six political parties to contest the upcoming General and Regional Elections, scheduled later this year.

The decision came following a special meeting of the Commission on Friday, July 18, 2025, during which GECOM reviewed and validated lists submitted by parties in accordance with statutory timelines after Nomination Day on July 14.

The approved parties are:

  • A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)

  • Alliance for Change (AFC)

  • Assembly of Liberty and Prosperity (ALP)

  • Forward Guyana Movement (FGM)

  • People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C)

  • We Invest in Nationhood (WIN)

All six will contest the General Elections. However, only four — APNU, AFC, PPP/C, and WIN — have submitted complete lists to compete in all ten electoral districts for the Regional Elections.

The remaining two, ALP and FGM, will participate in select districts. ALP will be contesting in districts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10, while FGM will compete in districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10.

Initially, seven parties submitted candidate lists on Nomination Day. GECOM reported that some lists contained defects, which were communicated by the Chief Election Officer (CEO) by July 15. Parties were given until July 17 to correct and resubmit the documents. All corrections were received within the required timeframe, enabling the Commission to approve the final six parties.

Representatives and Deputy Representatives of the lists now have until July 21 to notify the CEO in writing if they intend to join lists — a process allowed under Guyana’s electoral laws. The CEO is expected to officially gazette and publish the final approved lists on July 23.

This marks a key milestone in the lead-up to Guyana’s highly anticipated elections, which come amid shifting political dynamics and growing competition from emerging parties.
