Clarendon, Jamaica – Giovanni Ellis, who was identified as a person of interest in the brutal killing of nine-year-old Kelsey Ferrigon, was fatally shot today during a police operation near Sandy Bay in Clarendon, according to reports.
The news comes just days after the body of young Kelsey, a student at St. John’s Primary School, was discovered at her home on Job Lane in Spanish Town on Friday, May 9th. The horrific discovery, made by her 16-year-old brother around 8 p.m. while their mother was away, has sent shockwaves through the community. Initial police reports indicate that Kelsey was found partially nude inside a barrel and showed signs of physical abuse, leading investigators to believe she was sexually assaulted before her tragic death.
Ellis, who was reportedly out on bail for a rape charge, was considered armed and dangerous by the authorities.
The community continues to grapple with the immense grief and anger sparked by this heinous crime. The Honourable Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, and the Member of Parliament for the constituency, vehemently condemned the “horrific killing.” In a statement, Minister Grange expressed her deep sorrow, saying, “I spent the day in the constituency trying to comfort and commiserate with those who have been affected by this latest act of brutality against a little girl. Like everyone there, I feel the pain of this vile act to my core.”
The profound sadness extended to St. John’s Primary School in St Catherine, where teachers and students gathered for morning devotion on Monday to mourn the loss of Kelsey Ferrigon. Despite Kelsey being an afternoon shift student, the palpable grief was evident as the school community reflected on the tragic passing of one of their own.
Senior Superintendent of Police Hopton Nicholson, commander for the St Catherine North Police Division, attended the devotion with a team of officers to offer support to the grieving school. “We know that some of you turned up for school and learnt of the gruesome act that took one of your own. We are here to empathise with you and to assure you that we will be doing our best to make sure that perpetrator is caught and brought to justice,” SSP Nicholson assured the students and staff.
Rosena Slater, Vice Principal of the morning shift, stated that the school staff is closely monitoring students for any signs of distress and will provide access to guidance counselors as needed.
