Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to visit St Lucia from June 28 to July 4, marking a historic first for the Caribbean island and signaling a deepening of ties between Africa and the region.
Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre confirmed the upcoming visit, stating that two days—June 30 and July 1—will be dedicated to official engagements, while the remainder of the trip will be a personal vacation for the Nigerian leader.
“Two of these days, June 30 and July 1, will be dedicated to an official visit, with the remainder of the trip set aside as a personal vacation for the president. I believe that the visit of the President of Nigeria represents a unique and historic opportunity to deepen the bonds between Africa and the Caribbean,” Pierre said during a press briefing.
He emphasized the cultural and historical links between the Caribbean and Africa, particularly Nigeria, and noted that the visit underscores the importance of strengthening strategic and sustainable partnerships between the two regions.
Pierre has also invited leaders of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to travel to St Lucia during the visit for formal talks with Tinubu. The discussions are expected to explore cooperation in areas such as economic development, education, infrastructure, and diplomatic exchange.
The OECS includes Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Montserrat, the British Virgin Islands, and Anguilla.
