The Nevis Island Administration officially launched the Nevis Film Commission on Sunday, June 22, with a celebratory event at the Nevis Performing Arts Center (NEPAC), signaling the island’s growing commitment to becoming a prime destination for international film and television productions.
The evening began with a cocktail reception and a screening of the acclaimed documentary Hamilton’s America, followed by remarks from The Honourable Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis, and Film Commissioner Pamela Martin, who introduced the Commission’s vision and its role in fostering growth in the local creative industry.
The event drew notable attendees, including Minister Spencer Brand and Her Honour Deputy Governor General Mrs. Hyleta Liburd, reflecting the island’s broad support for this cultural and economic initiative.
A highlight of the night was a live virtual Q&A with director Alex Horwitz, who shared insights on Nevis’ historical significance as the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton. Horwitz revealed that the Hamilton’s America production team had initially intended to visit Nevis as part of their research, but the trip was canceled due to the Zika virus outbreak—a missed opportunity that made this weekend’s event all the more meaningful.
Attendees were also entered into raffles for exclusive prizes, including Cape Air tickets and a stay at Mount Nevis Hotel, and were treated to a special appearance by actress Juliette Jeffers, known for her roles in Tulsa King and The Residence.
“The formal launch of the Nevis Film Commission is a giant leap forward for the emerging film industry on the island of Nevis,” said Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis. “What started during the COVID-19 pandemic with MSR Media is now blossoming into a legitimate effort at diversifying the local economy. Nevis remains focused on its mission to create a unique destination for film, photo shoots, commercials, and televised events. The Film Commission now provides a local interface for all those interested in using Nevis for their next production. We invite the world to do business in Nevis.”
Nevis has recently garnered attention in the international film scene, serving as the backdrop for productions like A Week in Paradise (Lionsgate) and Christmas in the Caribbean starring Elizabeth Hurley—both available on major platforms like Amazon Prime.
“The launch of the Film Commission reflects Nevis’ readiness to support high-quality productions,” said Nevis Film Commissioner Pamela Martin. “We’ve created a foundation that will support filmmakers from production to post, while also generating jobs, skills training, and economic impact for the people of Nevis.”
With competitive incentives for qualifying productions and a growing portfolio of successful film projects, Nevis is positioning itself as a serious player in the Caribbean’s creative economy.
