In a proud moment for the City of Miramar and the wider Bahamian American community, Commissioner Avril Cherasard was honored with the prestigious Glass Ceiling Award by the Treasure Coast Bahamian Connection Organization (TCBCO) on July 12.
The award was presented during TCBCO’s annual gala, which celebrates trailblazing American and Bahamian women whose achievements have broken barriers and inspired future generations.
Commissioner Cherasard, the first Bahamian American woman elected to the Miramar City Commission, was recognized alongside an impressive slate of honorees, including Shanta Knowles, the first female Bahamian Commissioner of Police; Katherine Fernandez Rundle, the first Cuban American State Attorney; Waltiea Rolle, the first Bahamian WNBA player; and Linda Hudson, the first female Mayor of Fort Pierce.
Accepting the award, Commissioner Cherasard delivered a moving message: “I proudly accept this Trailblazing Woman Award on behalf of all the little girls who were told they would not go far because of the environment they were born into. Your dreams are achievable!” Her remarks drew a standing ovation and struck a powerful chord with attendees, especially young women aiming to overcome systemic challenges.
Commissioner Cherasard was born and raised in Nassau and migrated to the U.S. as a teen. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and has made Miramar her home since purchasing property in the city in 2010. Cherasard has built a career in public service, working with the Florida Department of Health and the Social Security Administration before transitioning into real estate. As a licensed professional, she has also served as a Governor for the Broward, Palm Beaches & St. Lucie Realtors Association.
Recently, she was presented with the Key to the City of Barraterre, Exuma, The Bahamas, during the 40th Annual Barraterre Homecoming Festival & Regatta, held June 5–9.
The Glass Ceiling Award honors individuals who have shattered societal limits and championed progress within their communities. TCBCO’s gala remains a cornerstone event that uplifts those whose achievements empower others to dream and lead boldly.
