On Tuesday morning, a migrant boat carrying approximately 15 individuals capsized just before reaching the shores of Sunny Isles Beach on Tuesday morning.
The incident has left three people injured. One of the injured individuals required an airlift to the hospital, according to authorities.
Swift response by U.S. Customs and Border Protection
Reports are that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents responded to the incident following reports of a suspected maritime smuggling event in the Sunny Isles area.
The vessel had capsized near the shoreline and a dozen migrants who were onboard were assisted by responding agencies on the scene.
According to reports, three other migrants were apprehended on the shore by authorities, further intensifying the unfolding drama.
Airlifted to safety
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that initially, all three injured individuals were receiving medical attention, but ultimately, only one required an urgent airlift to a nearby hospital.
Migrant crisis persists
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by the influx of migrants attempting to reach U.S. shores.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami, the 2023 fiscal year has already seen the interception of nearly 12,000 migrants.
This includes over 6,300 Cubans, more than 3,700 Haitians, and nearly 1,900 individuals from the Dominican Republic, highlighting the persistent nature of this crisis.
