Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took center stage in Hollywood on Friday morning to confront the aftermath of intense rainfall that inundated South Florida due to a tropical disturbance.
Accompanied by Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie and Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue, DeSantis underscored the severity of the situation.
Record rainfall plagues Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale
City officials in Hollywood reported nearly 20 inches of rainfall since Tuesday, exacerbating flooding conditions.
In Fort Lauderdale, similar challenges persisted, prompting Mayor’s acknowledgment of the city’s ongoing struggle.
Receding waters bring relief amid cleanup efforts
Despite the disruption caused by flooding, residents of Hollywood expressed relief on Friday morning as water levels began to recede from inundated streets, necessitating the towing of stranded vehicles.
DeSantis disclosed that over 100 pumps are operational to mitigate the flooding’s impact.
Coordinated response and advisory
DeSantis emphasized continuous coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to aid in recovery efforts.
Guthrie, meanwhile, urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and document property damage thoroughly.
Precautions urged amid ongoing threat
With more rain expected, DeSantis reassured the public of South Florida’s preparedness to manage the crisis.
However, city officials in Hollywood pressed for additional pumps to bolster flood control measures as they brace for forthcoming weather challenges.
