Broward County to introduce walk-through metal detectors in all public high schools this fall

In a bid to bolster campus safety, Broward County announces plans to install walk-through weapons detectors across all public high schools in the upcoming academic year.

The initiative comes as a proactive measure following the utilization of hand-held metal detectors for random searches in previous years.

Phased implementation

While the deployment of walk-through detectors is slated for all high schools, the initial phase will encompass testing the system in 10 schools.

Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn rationalizes the phased approach as a strategic move to ensure effective implementation and garner community acceptance.

Ensuring equity in safety measures

Board members emphasize the importance of equitable safety standards across all schools.

Dr. Allen Zeman underscores the significance of fostering a sense of security among students, advocating for uniform safety protocols to mitigate disparities.

For board members Debi Hixon and Lori Alhadeff, the issue transcends policy – it is deeply personal.

Having experienced the tragic loss of loved ones in the Parkland school shooting, their advocacy for comprehensive safety measures is driven by a fervent desire to prevent future tragedies.

Addressing operational challenges

Amidst the ambitious rollout, concerns arise regarding logistical challenges in managing the influx of students through the detectors daily.

Superintendent Hepburn acknowledges the need for meticulous planning and cites neighboring districts’ experiences as valuable reference points.

Pilot programs Pave the way

To streamline the transition, pilot programs will be initiated at Flanagan and Taravella high schools this summer.

Jaime Alberti, the district’s chief of safety and security, emphasizes the importance of training security personnel to ensure the seamless operation of the new system.

Funding the initiative

With an estimated cost of $1.3 million for full-scale implementation, financing the project poses a challenge.

Superintendent Hepburn reassures stakeholders that funds will be sourced from the district’s capital budget, prioritizing student safety as a paramount concern.

In embracing proactive safety measures, Broward County demonstrates a steadfast commitment to safeguarding its educational institutions and fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth.
