Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) says it will continue major infrastructure upgrades across Miami-Dade and Broward counties in 2026 as part of efforts to reduce outages, strengthen the electric grid and restore power more quickly after severe weather events.
The company said the planned improvements are aimed at making its system more resilient during hurricanes and other extreme weather conditions while maintaining reliable service for customers year-round.
In Miami-Dade County, FPL plans to complete 203 Storm Secure Underground Program projects, replacing overhead neighborhood power lines with underground lines designed to better withstand storms.
The utility company also plans to install 49 intelligent devices on main, neighborhood and underground power lines. The automated smart switches are designed to detect outages and reroute electricity to help prevent larger interruptions.
Additionally, 53 main power lines serving critical facilities, including hospitals, 911 call centers, police and fire stations, water treatment plants and emergency operation centers, are scheduled to be strengthened.
FPL said 2,193 miles of power lines in Miami-Dade will undergo tree and vegetation trimming, while 37,059 power poles will be inspected and reinforced or replaced if necessary.
In Broward County, FPL plans to complete 175 undergrounding projects and install 24 intelligent devices across the local grid.
The company also intends to strengthen five main power lines serving essential facilities and carry out vegetation management along 1,597 miles of power lines.
Another 24,033 power poles in Broward are expected to be inspected as part of the company’s ongoing grid hardening efforts.
Across Florida, FPL said it continues to invest in technology and infrastructure improvements to enhance reliability and reduce outage times.
According to the company, self-healing smart grid technology helped avoid more than 1.6 million customer interruptions in 2025. FPL also reported having installed 246,000 intelligent devices statewide and undergrounded nearly 2,000 miles of neighborhood power lines.
The utility said 85 percent of its main power lines have now been hardened or placed underground, while 97 percent of transmission structures are made of steel or concrete.
FPL noted that its service reliability is approximately 67 percent better than the national average. The company recently received the 2025 ReliabilityOne National Reliability Award from PA Consulting for service reliability and was also recognized for balancing grid investments with customer affordability.
“Our employees work every day in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties to provide safe, reliable electric service while keeping customer bills as low as possible,” said Armando Fernandez, director of external affairs for FPL.
“By continuing to invest in our electric grid, we are strengthening resilience year-round and helping our communities recover faster when severe weather impacts our area,” he added.
